People Who Regret Getting The Band

Recommended Posts

I agree, no ONE thing will be right for every single person. It just doesn't work like that. Tat1too, I'm sorry that the band has been such a difficult experience and I pray the issues it has caused you will be resolved.

Thanks so much, sweetie.....you look awesome, but looks like you had another procedure......looks like we do have tats in common...lol! Sleeving wasnt being done when i had mine, but a friend of mine had it with very little success either, but i have a friend who had the lap band same day as mine and she has reached goal with no problems.....i worry about the band causing major problems as it is a foreign object that is being rejected...all i can do is pray about it....Thanks again for not being mean, Jan

Granted I'm newly banded, but so far I'm so glad I did this. I only wish I'd done it years sooner.

Tat1too, I'm sorry it's not working for you. You're right, it doesn't work for everyone. We're all different and have different needs. Be it diets or WLS, there definitely isn't a cookie cutter recipe for successful weight loss.

You talked about flabby skin. Are you speaking of your tummy? If so, many insurances will cover tummy skin removal after a weigh loss of 100 pounds or more. This includes Medicare and Blue Cross, and they tend to set the standards for everyone else.

Best wishes to you. I hope you find a solution that works for you.

My insurance wont cover it, and i havent lost 100 pounds.....only 70......flabby tummy, arms, boobs...everything! But at my age, not concerned with any of it anymore...just want to stop being sick and tortured with the choking and vomiting! I cant even go out to a restaraunt and eat ibecause i just waste my money and usually choke on the first bite...not to mention the embarressment....I wish you lots of success.....and no side effects...remember, i am almost 5 years out, and still suffering...which didnt start until the last couple of years, strange....

tatto

have you tried appealing to your insurance company about removing the band, it seems to me that if they know your body is rejecting it and you cannot keep adequate nutrition in without vomiting it up, then that should be grounds to have it removed. I would seek legal advice on appealing to your insurance compnay about removal, all they can say is no, but it never hurts to try and having your body reject it is something that is out of your control and your insurance should help get it resolved with the help of your surgeon writing letters for you. good luck

The reason your insurance wont pay for it is that you are keeping food down and maintaining your weight...

Tat1too yes I had a lower body lift and BA. The flabby skin is a negative side effect of weight loss for some, for sure. It was for me.

I am so glad to read this about the band. Yet another opportunity to learn about the possibilities of life after being banded. My regular doctor has twice told me that over 50% of his patients gain weight back after 5 years of being banded. Does that number scare anybody else reading this????

Tat1, I am so sorry that you are having such a hard time with your band. I feel really bad for you. I can only imagine the torture you go through daily. I pray that you find a way to get it removed. It's like a nightmare many of us can only imagine.

Cynthia

Which insurance company are you with? I am with Tricare and your story scares me.

Yes, the ragaining scares me too. Even gastric bypass people regain. Think how awful that must be for them. All that re-routing and then gaining weight back. At least for most of us banders, if we regain our weight, all we have left is the band.

Jan, I would think that maybe your surgeon could remove it probono because of how it is ruining your life. Guess that's too much to ask.

My band is loose at the moment. I can eat anything. If I start to gain too much weight, I'll be in quicksmart to see my Dr to get more fills to get back to restriction. How does someone regain if their band is not malfunctioning unless they're not adjusting their bands to maintain restriction? I don't get it.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
