Really? That's awesome are you on the same diet?

Yes...it's not that bad and I just started my ticker today. I have no idea if I lost more than 2 pounds...I went by the last time I saw him and will wait to be surprised at the hospital. I think I lost about 5-6...I feel better and already have more energy. My surgery is 9:45 am---what time is yours?

I asked Wendy when I saw Dr. D last week and she said 9:45 am was the time so far---they would call me the day before so I guess it's not set in stone until they call. I had to remove my toe rings and all my jewelry before surgery...I hadn't taken one toe ring off in 9 years lol. I am staying overnight too. I am hoping the surgery goes as smoothly as this pre-op diet!!

4 days to go and I can't wait but I find myself getting nervous. I am surprised to hear how each Dr has different rules for Pre and Post Op diets. Dr. Dietrick has me doing the following:

Preop- 11day liquid High Protein Diet w/ only 1 small meal of meat and veggie

PostOp-

Day 1-5: Liquid ONLY

Day 6-10: Soft

Day 11 and Beyond: Regular food

The 11 day liquid diet has been very rough but today I stepped on the scale and I've lost 10lbs... I can't believe it!

My Dr really didn't give me a list of things I may need for my 1 day stay at the hospital so I am wondering do I need anything?

Just as different doctors use their individual protocols for diet, so are the recommendations for what to bring to the hospital. I was asked to bring a robe, Chapstick, and tooth brush. The only item I used was the chapstick.

BTW, any thoughts on sf gerber (fruits) and gerber in general?

I am now "on the other side" officially, my surgery was yesterday afternoon! I was able to return home last evening. It took longer than anticipated to get to the OR because I cannot tolerate Heperin, and the doctor's orders were based on me being a diabetic, which I am not...It took over 2 hours to get those issues corrected.

I am still in some pain, mostly from the gas. I have been walking around the house frequently, trying to get my Protein and liquid requirements met. I have been taking Tylenol and one dose of the liquid hydrocodone so far. I requested the pharmacy to add their "grape" flavoring to the meds, which does make them more tolerable. I really dislike having to crush my other meds, very bitter to swallow. And, wonder of wonders, we received a phone call just as we were leaving for the hospital that the one medication which insurance did not want to cover was finally approved, saving us several hundred dollars.

I am still very bloated, though I remember feeling this way after surgery last summer. I will keep walking and try to be patient with myself.

I am able to tolerate all of the liquids from the pre-op diet, but I have to sip almost constantly to even come close to the daily 80 oz my doctor advised me to drink. I have been able to discern the feeling of being full, and knowing when to stop drinking for 30 minutes or so.

So, the real journey begins now. I am beyond ready to move forward and become healthier. Patience is a virtue I am determined to learn. We all take one day at a time...thanks to you all for the insight and emotional support shared on this forum!

I am so glad we are sharing this journey together, I am feeling like to gas is almost gone, and the pain of the port opening is becoming my main focus. I am working on getting in my Water as well; I did not do well yesterday at all, today I am ready with plan to get all my water in!! lol. Last night I made a bad decision to lay in bed instead of in the recliner unsure.png ...I paid with a lot of pain, with or with out pain medicieneblink.png . I went back to the recliner at 530 am this morning and I am starting to feel better.

We will be fine and this is going to be amazing! I feel it in my gut (lol no punt intended) hahahahlaugh.png

I was a little nervous as well, I visited with everyone that was able to be there in the morning with me, kissed my spouse, cried a little and then I was like IM READY!!! That is my experience, everyones is a little different, but I was focused on the new skinny me and how much this is going to help me. My only word of advise is stay on the positive side of the road.

Good Luck!

It seems that we are having almost identical issues to deal with...trying to drink that many oz of liquids is the thorn in my side now.

I have been able to sleep in bed, though I have to stay on my back. This is not difficult for me, as last year following my MVA, I spent one week in the recliner(did not do well there) after getting released from the hospital. I spent the next 6 months sleeping on my back.

I so happy that both of us can say that we are feeling a bit better today, and I am confident that this trend will continue!

Good luck to everyone being banded this week. I have my 4 week follow-up on Wednesday and if everything checks out, I'll hopefully be getting my first fill! Fingers are soooo crossed. I'm ready to get this party started. :)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
