48 Hours Post Lap Band Surgery And I Feel Like I'm Going To Starve To Death

Recommended Posts

Please just know that you are not alone...I got banded 3 days ago and I am really fighting with mental hunger. I am starving because my family is eating all the foods that i love. Its been harder than I could ever imagine...I guess its because its around the holidays that makes it that much harder. I cant believe I am actually looking forward to the pureed stage..yikes

I was banded on the 23rd and Christmas dinner at my sister's smelled and looked so good. My chicken broth, however, was not so good. I appreciate every ones thoughts as they go through the same phases as I am. I like the term "mental hunger". have that, I know that having the band will take me to a different relationship with food..the road may be long and rocky at times, but I will get there!

Good luck to all!

I admit. I did not follow the rules. I was banded 12/20. I fixed some potato Soup and had a bout two teaspoons of it and it completely satified all my cravings and emptiness. It felt great...

I hate to be back here like I’m whining, but since moving to the next phase of liquids, which has been skim milk and Protein Shakes, I’ve gone from feelings of starvation to almost non-stop nausea. Is this normal at this point out from surgery day? I couldn’t even finish half of a 6 oz Protein Shake today and had to stop because I thought I was going to throw up. I’m sipping, not gulping so I don't think it's the rate I'm drinking.

I wasnt allowed to have any shakes or milk until day 5 of my surgery. Your stomach is still healing and it is too hard on it. It was too hard for me to drink cold stuff anyway. What got me thru was the hot apple cider mix. It was warm to my tummy and helped satisfy me. I would make it as hot as I could drink it. I would one in the morning and one in the evening. you can usually find it next to the hot cocoa mix. They have it in sugar free also. Hang in there it wont be long and you can have Protein Soups, they are thin and wil be very helpful.

Thanks Brendap - I will retrace my steps a bit and slow down. Maybe going back to broth will help. I'm worried about nutrition, but I guess at this point I just need to focus on liquids of any kind. ??

I have to say I was banded on 12/21 and for the most part everything has gone great. Very little pain, little hunger. However today on Day 5 I am having a really hard time. I actually cried over not being able to eat as i

watched my family eat all their favorite foods around me. I have been drinking, and having problems with Protein Shakes because they taste bad. So basically by days have been broth, Water, broth, juice, and an occaisional Protein Shake if I can get it down. I actually felt really depresses today and with no regrets thus far I fell a bit apart. I feel better now. I had my broth for dinner and took a short walk. This too shall pass... This is my mantra.

i have been crying like a big baby over food...everytime I smell it I desire it. I have been doing very well at staying away but the urge still exist. I cant stand Protein Shakes and I feel like I am wasting my money by trying different brands and then hating them...I know this phase will pass, but it needs to hurry up :)

I was banded on Thanksgiving and I felt the same way. Protein Shakes will help and sip away. I thought I was going to die lol but I promise it gets better as the days go by. Good Luck!

For those of you nice enough to respond to my post, and for anyone that it might help in the future, I wanted to update my post. It's day 10 post op for me, and about day 6 I did 2 things that either on their own or together (along with the protein) made the difference and ended the sick feelings: 1) I stopped taking the heavy duty pain meds, I started talking anti-nausia meds. Within about a day I felt worlds better.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
