My surgeon's office submitted for approval after my visit last friday. I've been checking Humana's website for the approval status, and today it was listed as "Pended" with an effective date of 12/15/2011. I'm not sure what the effective date means? I'm sure hoping that maybe that's a date they submitted as a surgery date? I would LOVE that. I've actually been hoping for a Thursday surgery date, because that would make it so I only have to request one day off. When I work Thursday, I am off Fri, Sat and Sun. I'm hoping to be able to go back to work on Monday, if I have surgery on Thursday. I work at a hospital as a clerk, so the bulk of my job involves sitting on my tukus. I'm thinking that will work well with my recovery ;) So anyway- anyone else have any insight to an "effective date"??

You may or may not be ready to go back to work in just four days. Don't count on feeling great for at least a week maybe more.

I have a sedentary job too. I took off a full two weeks and went back to work on Monday. By the end of the day on the first two days, I was really sore from sitting in a office chair most of the day.

If I had to, I could have gone back sooner, but four days would have been too soon for me.

I had surgery on a Wednesday and tried to go back to work on Monday. I also have a desk job. Only made it a few hours and then got sent home. I did work from home Tuesday and Wednesday and then was able to make it in on Thursday. I would definately recommend a week for recovery.

I'm not sure what the pending status means, but I'm sure the billing dept of your surgeons office could answer that question for you. I guess I got lucky with the insurance approval process. The office called me at 10 am one morning to tell me they had everything they needed and that they had submited my case for approval to insurance that morning. Then they called back at 3pm to say I had been approved and could schedule my surgery in the next two weeks. 5 hours and I was approved!

If you don't get any answers from the surgeons office you can also try calling the insurance company. Mine is always good about answering questions, but I know some are not. But it is worth a shot :)

I had my surgery on Monday 11-14-11 and today being 4 days later I feel much better but I know I wouldnt be able to go back to work. I think you will need more time than just 3 days, because on my 3rd day I was still sore and not feeling like myself. I would call the insurance company and ask them what the pending date means. Good Luck!

I called the insurance company, and they were very helpful. Apparently my surgery date is scheduled for December 15th. The "pended" status means they are still in the process of approving it. The woman I spoke to was very helpful, and updated all my demographic information, because she said if they hadn't been updated fairly recently, it will reject the claim. Not sure if that is true, but anything to make sure it doesn't get rejected for something stupid!

My surgery will be on a Thursday, which I'll need to take off. I think I will take the extra time off, but because of how my schedule falls that will mean that with two days off I'll be able to be off from the day before surgery until the next Friday. The main reason I'm hoping to get back as soon as possible is that we have a number of people out on medical leave already. I work on the OB unit of the hospital I'm having surgery at. I believe we will have 4 people out on medical leave at that time! I'd like to NOT add to the scheduling nightmare any more than I have to. Of course, if I don't feel up to it, I will be able to stay home. Either way, I have to be cleared by Employee Health to go back. That will give me the option of either returning or not. I'd just really prefer to not miss more than necessary.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
