Whey protein?

Recommended Posts

I'm confused by what has whey in it and what does not. For instance, I have been using a supplement which has gobs of Vitamins in it with 41 grams of Protein per serving. Is that whey protein? I mix it with Water and it is really tasty, but I want to make sure I'm drinking a quality product.

It could be soy Protein. I've heard that whey is a better protein than soy. I don't know why or if it's even true.

They normally advertise that it's whey or soy on the container. I suppose they might just put it in the ingredient list, though all of 'em I've seen have it in huge letters.

Whey Protein is made from dehydrating whey residue. Remember "Little Miss Muffet, sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and whey?

Whey is what is left over when they make cheese, the watery part they used to throw away. It is not a complete Protein and that is why some supplements include other amino acids.

I said, "It is NOT considered a sufficient source of complete replacement protein", even tho it IS easily absorbed (which is why they use it for ByPass patients). HOWEVER, I may be wrong as I have never READ that anywhere --- but I am aware of how all the containers of Whey have HUGE warning statements that they are NOT to be used for weight loss, but for muscle building. And I am also aware of how often they are supplemented with amino acids - and how there are MANY amino acids and that the full complement is only found in (I think) eggs, milk & flesh meat. If I am wrong, I will further edit this -- I just worry about people relying on unjury as some sort of protein replacement just because it says "medical use" on the bottle.

Anything over 20 grams of protein at any one meal (from ANY source) is not considered, by nutritionists, to be used by the body as protein, per se, but will be converted to stored fat. Be sure to watch your overall caloric intake, too.

Jessie,

This did help, thank you! I was not aware that the most Protein one can digest is 30 at a time. I have learned something totally new now, the difference between whey and soy! Cool!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
