@Dawn..... Hey girl, I messaged you a few days after your surgery and got worried when I didn't hear back from you. I',m glad to see your ok and banded. I didn't know you got the band through your band, I've was looking into it and couldn't find anyone that did it through the belly button. Where did you get your surgery done?

@Jonathan I'm also from NY, still going through the process of getting insurance approval i go for my psych eval/nutritionist/endo on fri. I am hopeful that my insurance company approves my request quickly. I am ready for this journey

Hey MzNelly, yeah, i've kinda been around, but something happened to my original sign in name, so i haven't been able to log back into it to see or get any messages. so sorry about that. i wasn't ignoring you promise :D:D

I had my surgery done at NYU. I thought they were going to make 5 incisions and they never said they were going to go through my belly button, so i wonder if that is just a decision they made when they were in the room. at any rate, they made only 3 incisions. the one by my sternum is so tiny, it's going to probably heal and disappear. i don't know about the one by my port yet because my steri strip is still attached, and it's still attached at my belly button too, so i don't know how big those are.

So tomorrow is my big day!!!!

i am really excited! today I am on Clear Liquids, can anyone advise me if I can have cranberry juice and other dark "clear" liquids?

I am trying to drink a little hot broth every hour or so to keep myself feeling full.

I think the clear liquid rule is that you have to be able to see through it. Cranberry juice not so much, but apple juice may be ok. Good luck tomorrow!

Yay that's great news Jonathan. I hope everything continues to go well for you. :D

I'm also from Brooklyn. Right now I'm in the 6 months supervised weight-loss program phase. I have two more appointments with the my doctor. Also I have to meet with a psychologist still. Hopefully my insurance will approve me for the surgery.

Please continue to give us updates on how you doing, Jonathan. =)

Best Wishes

thanks for all the great responses, my surgery was done yesterday, i went in at 930am, and was wisked away to pre-op, they asked a bunch of questions and got me ready for surgery. before i knew it i was awake by 1230/1pm, slipped in and out of sleep for the entire day in recovery (they kept me till 630) since I had sleep apnea they kept me for a minimum of 3 hours. i got a private suit! (it must be my charm! ;) j/k)

got to my room and they monitored me throughout the night, checking my blood sugar (diabetic) and my blood pressure. they woke me every 3 hours give or take, i was in great shape, even in recovery did not require any pain medications, the most pain I had was discomfort from abdominal gas pressing on my chest. it was not due to the surgical sites.

today they gave me the video xray to see that the band was in place, once it was a green light i got liquids, hot tea, an orange sorbet, i was able to take very very small amounts in and keep it down, you can tell when enough is enough, you don't want to over do it.

once i kept the fluids down they cleared me to leave by 1130, they gave me a script for vicodin, but I don't think i'll be needing it.

once I got home it was still difficult to do the 1 ounce (30ml) every 15 minutes, the best thing i had in my arsenal was the sugar free popsicles. they are a life saver.

right now at this moment i was able to do an entire popsicle within about 20 minutes so I think the swelling is starting to go down, and I am able to take in more fluids. i did sleep once I got home, i slept from around 330pm up till 8pm tonight.

i am slowly sipping on a bottle of Water, and have so far taken in about 2 ounces in the 15-30 minute period, I don't want to over do it b/c we all know what will happen :)

please let me know if you guys have any questions! ( I am in the healthcare field so can answer some technical questions as well if you have any)

Is it worth it?

I think so, considering my wife went to Peter Lugers on my all Clear Liquids day (drug rep dinner) grrr!

this will change your life. and I do this for my health and for my kids!

my weight before surgery was 267 (i am 5'11") BMI of 37.X

after 1 week of liquids and my weigh in at the hospital pre-op was 251.5 BMI of 35 (ish)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
