I have been referred to an orientation at Kaiser Northern CA and am concerned that I will be told that I am not heavy enough when I get there. My BMI is at 35.2 with my stomach measuring 45 inches. I am shaped like an apple. Have anyone been turned away from Kaiser orientation for not being heavy enough?

I am also with Kaiser - Northern California. I just had a meeting with my PCP today, actually, to ask for a referral to the 12-week "gastric bypass seminar" (they call it that, but it's for all WLS). From the research I have done, the minimum requirements are a BMI of 40+ or of 35 with co-morbidities. It doesn't hurt to go in and ask to get a referral to the seminar, though. The worst thing that could happen is they say no. Good luck!

I went to the local 2 hour information class and I requested my doctor to refer me to the Clinic out of Richmond. My PCP made the referral this week and I was called by the Clinic at they have scheduled me for the 4-5 hours orientation with the surgeon, nutritionist, pych doc, and case manager for the end of this month. I am just scared that I will get to that stage and be told no.

From all the stuff I had read it was a 12-week class and you had to go once a week to the 2-hour class. Then, once the 12 weeks is over, you can then meet for the orientation with the surgeon. This was all just from reading online forums and such though. So you already have an appt with the surgeon? You should be good to go!

My doctor referred my right to the 2 hour class in Folsom. The appt with the surgeon is just part of the orientation to see if Kaiser will accept me for the surgery.

Oh okay. I guess I'm no help then. I tried, though. lol. If they do turn you away, you could always ask to get a fasting glucose blood test done. If your results are high enough, they might consider you? Just a suggestion.
