Hello! I have another week before I start my pre-op diet. My doctor has me on full liquid for 2 weeks...low carb. I'm not thrilled about that...jello/broth/sugar free popsicles along with my 5 Protein shakes/day but I'll take it. I'm wondering how much I will drop pre-surgery in that 2 week time frame. I am oh so excited about the surgery though...set for 4/18/11. :D

hi, I'm Willow, we have the same surgery date-April 18. I started my pre op diet a little early, 2-3 protien shakes a day w/ a small protien meal. And of course crystal light , sugar free Jello, popsicles, broth and I sometimes have a light yogurt. I,ve been doing this 1 mo and I got on the scale and am down 30 lbs as of today. Just keep at it your gonna get there, in my first 2 wks I dropped 18 lbs, of course everyone is different but I wanted to share and offer you some hope and support. Its such an emotional roller coaster at this juncture, I got a call from my cardiologist and they said my insurance wasn't going to cover my chemical stress test and it was so hard to stick to my diet that night as I sunk pretty low but I just told myself to wait it out and see if my doc could work it out with billing--well the option that i have is a treadmill stress test which scares me I am at 288, but I already started walking a few weeks back and I can stationary bike about 4 miles in twenty min. Sooooo, i,m hoping it will be ok, I go for the test on april 1. I just can't let myself think that I won't be able to do it and get my clearance. I,ve wanted this surgery for 5 years and finally made up my mind that it was going to happen this year last summer. I am so happy that I have found the this site with so many supportive ppl willing to stick together, good luck on your journey, keep in touch I'd love to hear how your experience is going....

Thanks! Did you have trouble sleeping on an empty stomach? I got about 4 hours sleep last night..

Well, my doctor has me on an Atkins-type diet, so I don't have an empty stomach. I just can't eat bread, rice, potatoes, Pasta, anything with wheat in it. I can have all veggies, meat, eggs, cheese, fats and 1 yogurt and 1 piece of fruit today.

You will make it, I know you will. After a few days your stomach will shrink and you will be able to do this!

Day 2 of liquids....not as bad as I thought! I'm feeling very full from the shakes and chai tea, Water and Soups. Miso Soup is my saviour..45cal and 3g of Protein for a snack! The only draw back to so little calories is lack of energy when i'm out biking. Going in to the hospital today for my pre-op bloodwork...and last meeting with the dr.... So excited!

I started the pre-of diet the day after I was approved. When my surgery coordinator told me that she said "Make sure you go out for a nice meal tonight, honey." So I did. :D

Only yesterday did I do the math of how long I'd be on this diet. I thought it would be three weeks, but when I looked at the dates, it's actually four weeks less a day. Sneaky clinic people.

I take two Protein shakes (Meditrim) and one Protein Bar (also Meditrim), and two cups of veggies (very limited list). With those veggies, I've made some pretty interesting Soups, and a big bowl of that is usually my dinner. Today I'm doing to make a sauce with tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and sweet peppers, and I'm going to serve that on top of some spaghetti squash a few times this week. I enjoy cooking, but rarely have I been so excited to make something because I'm being creative with a very restrictive diet.

Days one through three were okay - I was working and too busy to worry about whati I wasn't eating. I even missed my last shake of the day on Friday. Yesterday was a whole other thing. I stayed home all day, and we basically did nothing (blessedly so) until about 2 pm. And today, for dinner, instead of making a Soup, I just cut up a bunch of raw veggies. Obviously not enough for me. I was starving through the evening, and finally gave up at 11 pm and went to bed. But I couldn't sleep because my stomach was growling. So I got up, slowly ate 6 soda crackers, drank a big glass of Water, and was able to sleep. I guess today I need to make sure to have some Soup.< /p>

I haven't weighed myself yet, but I plan to today, to see if I've lost any weight in the past 5 days. I now that I've lost 13 pounds from my highest weight, which was earlier this year, so I'll be using that as my starting weight.

if anyone's got some interesting all-veggie recipes, I'd love to hear them, because my repertoire might get motonous. And I have to spend three days out of town this week, and have lunch with some colleagues. Plain garden salads, here I come!

I am on the same pre-op diet. My tummy is rumbling and my brain is so foggy but I know I am going to make it! Today is day four and if I made it through yesterday, I can make it through today! My surgery is set for 04/15/11. We are on the same track. How much weight do you want to lose? My goal is 100 lbs off. I am sooooo stinkin ready for this!

@ Musarion - my information said that 2 days before surgery to do a Full liquid diet—Creamy Soups, milkshakes, liquid Protein shakes, ice cream, and pudding. The day before is clear liquid - coffee, tea, broth, clear sodas.

I'm voluntarily starting a liquid diet just to get used to it. My surgery is scheduled for the 13th, but I thought I'd better get a jump start.

So far so good. I haven't cheated yet....yet!

Well, I'm between you two. The 14th. I get the shakes and 2 steamed veggies a day. I cheated a bit today and ate a slice of turkey breast. At least it was lean protein... I do this until the day before, then Clear liquids until 5 hours before then nothing. Pre-op exam is tomorrow. Woo Hoo.

Cheating with lean turkey meat is NOT cheating!! I stuck my finger in the Peanut Butter by accident. I don't know how that happened! I was getting the dog food out of the pantry and it was the strangest thing, the lid flew off of the peanut butter and my finger accidentally slipped into the jar. It was a bit messy so I had to lick it off!

This pre-op diet is for the birds. Actually, it's more for bunnies. I'm having my two shakes, one Protein bar, and lots of veggies. Today I'm done week 1 of 4. Yes, 4 weeks of the pre-op diet!

I'm whining a bit but I've had a big success already. I travel a lot for work and one of my biggest challenges is what I eat when I'm on the road. Yesterday and today I had my shakes, and other than that, it was just veggies. dinner was a salad with chicken breast and dressing on the side. If I used 1/8 of a teaspoon of dressing, that was it.

I'm also practicing the tiny bites / chewing a gabillion times. So eating about a third of the salad yesterday took almost an hour. Tonight I ate about 2/3, but I was able to do the small bites and chewing, all while chatting with colleagues.

So I avoided the emotional eating I'm famous for when I'm travelling, and I was able to eat healthy and a small portion, while my tablemates had pizza and fish and chips.

So even though I want to stamp my feet that I have three more weeks of this diet, I'm really happy at what I've accomplished so far.

Small victories, small victories. That's my mantra.

I start my 5 day liquid diet on Wednesday (4/13) and surgery is Monday 4/18. I'm already dreading the 5 days but feel lucky after reading some are two weeks or more! No food at all...just 3 shakes a day and the rest is "clear" liquid.

Good luck everyone!

I'm on day 3 of the 2 week all liquid (Optimfast) diet and I keep messing up (day 1 I had a can of tuna, day 2 I had chicken w/ cheese and bacon and broccoli). But the weight keeps falling off: 2 lbs. the first day and a lb. yesterday. I did get my head right in the 2 weeks between the consult and the start of the diet because I lost about 5 lbs. This liquid diet really doesn't make me hungry but not having the 'activity of eating' is building some negative emotions which is odd.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
