Do I have to drink protein shakes????

So I'm really confused, I got my post op diet from the nutritionist and she has me on 80-90 grams of Protein. I thought that sounded like alot for me because high protein causes me to get kidney stones. I've been worried since I got the post op diet and I just saw that the recommended protein for a woman is like 35ish??? i know I need protein but do I have to drink three Protein shakes (20g protein) a day and then some...Please help. Any comments welcome Thanks

Unfortunately, that sounds accurate, but it's only temporary. You're going to need a lot of protein the first few weeks after surgery to help you heal. 3 shakes a day sounds about right, or at least that was part of my post op diet as well. You're not going to be getting much nutritionally in the beginning so getting in those shakes is really important. Are you going to be using unjury? If so, that only adds up to 24oz of Fluid from your shakes and I think they want you to be shooting for 64. If you're anything like me, even in getting in those little bit of shakes is going to be a challenge the first week or so. If you're prone to kidney stone then they'll probably strongly encourage you keep up with your fluids but constipation from the protein and/or loose stools from all the liquids are the biggest complaints I hear. Remember to feel free to ask your doc and let them know your concerns. :)

Thanks for the reply. I got so worried I started second guessing myself about whether or not this is right for me.

I definitely didn't even come close to getting that much protein in. I had a shake a day, maybe two. Even still, it was probably more protein than I had before. I am and was fine. I don't know where they come up with protein helping you heal. I think it's more like lack of solids to not have the stomach working while it's healing :)

Here's an article that explains a little more on the importance of protein after bariatric surgery...

Also, protein helps wounds heal faster as it is necessary for tissue repair.
