What birth control should I use?

Recommended Posts

I just had my surgery and I want to get back on BC since I am becoming more fertile and I am just sick and tired of condoms. ;)

My boyfriend doesn't want me to get on any high hormonal BC because he is afraid that I will clot, especially after a major surgery ( its been about a month now )

So, what do you use or rather what would you use?

I have a Mirena IUD, I would recommend that, it works wonders. It's low-dose BC that doesn't use estrogen. You can have it up to 5 years and it's ALOT cheaper in the long run than other BC you'd pay for monthly or quarterly for the 5 year span. ;) Also, for me, it stopped my periods, which is pretty fantastic!

Some of my other friends also use Nuvaring, and that works well for them, the hard part might be remembering to change it though (for me personally, that's why I got the Mirena, I hate remembering to take pills!).

I would just consult your gyno about it, I know some won't put in Mirena if you haven't had at least one child. I don't know your situation, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

I used to be on Seasonique. I loved it. 4 periods a year. Then I switched to Nuvaring. It's nice too because you don't have to take a pill. I would put a reminder in my phone to tell me when to take it out. But the best advice is talk to your gyno to make sure you are on the right bc because there's so many out there! My hubby and I are now trying for a baby, so I'm not on a bc anymore. And my periods have finally come right on time by themselves!!!! whoo!!!!

Nuva ring here too. Even though I take my thyroid pills every morning I'm scared poopless about missing a BC pill for whatever reason.

I've had really no issues with it. I too have a reminder on my phone and on my calendar in the kitchen. The only thing I would say if you're thinking about doing the Nuva ring is make sure you store them in the fridge. My friend's brother now has a baby because his girlfriend didn't store her's in the fridge. Yeah....:(

I have an Implanon. Implant that goes in the arm and lasts 3 yrs. It's great for me. I just don't want to pop out a kiddo any time soon and my memory sucks. There is no way I could ever remember to take pills or remove stuff at the right time. Everyone reacts to the Implanon differently. Some people have sporatic periods (me). While other people stop having it. The periods aren't as bad or painful so they are really easy to deal with. The same goes for the depo shot. They contain basically the same hormones except that the depo shot only lasts around 3 months. I have severe alergies to many weird things, so I wanted to stick with something that was similar but lasted longer. Talk to your doctor. They will help you figure out which will be best for you! Good luck

I actually got the depo shot in 2007 after I had my twins, and I gained almost 60 pounds in a couple of months. I've heard of the shot having that effect on TONS of women, but of course not until they jammed that needle in my backside, my OB did NOT tell me of this possible side effect or I'd never have done it. :(

I'm not a medical professional by any means, but I'd advise anyone who asked for my opinion not to get it.

The more I think about the more I am leaning towards IUD Paragard - it is long lasting and has no hormones. The only thing is some doctors won't do it unless you have one kid. I already have an appointment in December for IUD consultation and if I can afford it and so on I think I will go through with it.

Actually, that's incorrect. :) The box says "Prior to dispensing to the patient, store refrigerated 2 - 4 degrees C (36-46 degrees F). After dispensing to the patient, NuvaRing can be stored up to 4 months at 25 degrees C (77 degrees F); excursions permitted to 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F). Avoid storing NuvaRing in direct sunlight or at temperatures above 30 degrees C (86 degrees F)."

I have used the NuvaRing over a year without storing it in the fridge without becoming pregnant. :)

Most docs won't put in an iud unless you hbevalready had one child because otherwise it can be very difficult and painful to insert since the cervix (opening to tue uterus) has never opened and is stiffer. Sorry to be medical/technical, but that's what I do!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
