November 2010 Bandsters - post op

Recommended Posts

DebWS,

I love your post! You not only have a great outlook, you are so positive. I too am 60 (as of July 2011) and am feeling better and better. I do not regret this decision either!

JaGo

Yesterday was my one year anniversary. I spent the day so busily that I didn't stop to remember and reflect...but I want to now. As I have said before, I regret not one minute of this decision. I feel better, look better, am happier, am healthier. I have not lost the weight I wanted to -- it is very slow to come off and until I get my knee replaced (Feb. 19) I am not likely to be very active...but my eating habits and my relationship with food are much, much healthier than they once were.

I hope, in the next year, to lose another 30 lbs. If this could happen, very gradually, it would be wonderful. But I will try to be patient and be content at being the tortoise in the race, rather than the hare, knowing that getting there is the ultimate goal. Meanwhile I continue to focus on healthy lifestyle and eating, I add things to my list of "no thank you" that make me feel ill or unhealthy, and find that, increasingly, fresh fruits and vegetables are my friend in every sense.

On November 9th, I will turn 60 (how did this happen, I wonder?). I have much to celebrate: a wonderful family, the blessings of life. And I will also Celebrate the gift for a LONGER, better life that have been given to me by having this surgery. Happy anniversary, November bandsters. May we all be well.

Hey November 2010 bandsters just checking in. I've been doing good so far, my fitness level has improved markedly. I'm now running/walking 5K's and have completed a Team Fitness class at my gym. I believe the fact that i'm burning more calories is driving my weight loss down. However, i've been at a plateau for about 2 months. Seems like every 10 lbs lost there's a 2-3 month plateau, it's frustrating..

Has anyone figured out how to break it? I don't think I need a fill because it takes very little for me to get full.

This would be interesting to know...if others see the same pattern as you do. Also...if there is a way to "break" this cycle of every 10lbs there is a 2-3 month plateau.

It's been a while since I checked in, but maybe having a lap band talk app will get to visit more often.

So far, I've lost 71 lbs, so I'm very happy with my results. I had knee surgery in January and had to have my band deflated. It was interesting being ble to eat almost normally. Of course, normal was not how I used to eat, which is how I got here to begin with.

For the most part, I've been pleased with the speed of weight loss and I know my doc is too. I currently have 8.5cc in a 13cc band. Technically, I've got 30 more pounds to go, but the doc says my BMI is already Ok. I'm shooting for 210 to 220, which means another 10 - 20 to go!

I hope all you November '10 Bandsters are doing well!

It has been a while since I have posted on this tread. I have almost reached my personal goal I set in 2010 by a half a pound. As time has passed I have decided that I want to reach my ideal body weight of 132 lbs and am now 17.5 lbs from that goal. To date I have lost 102.5 lbs and truly feel like a different person both inside and out. I often reflect back on the person I once was, I keep reminders of the morbidly obese Diane in constant view as a reminder. I have remained active in support groups and on this site to keep me focused. This has truly been a journey and a life changing event. I am not sure I really fully understood the band or how it worked until months into this, I have had my share of ups and downs, adjusting to the changes in my life and mourning the loss of a life that I left behind. I have no regrets and would do this again today if I needed to, I truly "LovetheNewMe" and the changes this surgery has helped me make in my life and me and for my familly.

I hope other November 2010 bandsters are doing well!

That's awesome.... I've been averaging 2-3lbs a month. I expected more like 5-6 lbs a month. Trying to find how I can shock my system to average that weight loss.. i have 45-50 lbs more to go.. at this rate I won't see it completely off until Spring 2013. I'd like to reach that goal at least by January.

What did you NOT understand....or what surprised you? I'm curious....as I always try to be proactive to try to ancipate things before they happen. If things surprised you....I'm curious as to what they were.....any information would be greatly appreciated for those who haven't made this step yet.

Blessings to you,

Chris

@ Chris. When I planned to have lap band surgery I researched the band, talked to other lap band patients and looked at the out comes of others. When I say I was I did not fully understand the band and how it worked this is what I mean, I was not totally prepared for the emotional attachment I had with food. I knew I loved to cook and eat but I had no idea how much I really used food as a substitute for coping and behavior. I went to all the pre assessment classes met with the doctors but I never really classified myself in the categories they discussed. Yes I was over weight, yes I was considered morbidly obese but I really did not realize how much I used food for so many different things beside nutrition. My first few months were difficult, I truly morned the loss of eating foods and socializing with food. I reached a point where I did not care whether I ate or not, my attitude was, "what's the use, food is no fun anymore." I had to truly learn to develop a new relationship with food, social gathers and just eating in general. the lap band is not for everyone, you have to be ready emotionally and really ready to make a life style change. If anyone is doing this surgery and thinks the band alone will help them they are wrong, the band may prevent you from eating certain foods from time to time but it does not help you make healthy choices, you have to learn that what you put in your body is what gives you the results you want. You can lose without exercising, a lot have. But for long term success the research shows any SWL patient maintains what they lose by adding exercise and activity to there normal daily routine. I am a different person than I was when I started, I am very consious of what I put in my body, I make healthy choices more often than not and I do not consider this a journey any more. This is my life and I chose to eat and live healthy. My suggestion to you and anyone planning this surgery, is have a strong family support, do this for yourself and no one else and make sure you deal with the emotional side of eating sooner than later, because you will have to deal with it. I have been very successful with my lap band, the best choice for me but I have had my ups and downs but I wanted this bad enough to keep pushing forward even through the times when I was stalled. Good luck to you. Diane

Actually...never made the step yet. I'm making the step early July. I'm one of these guys....that is a researcher...and love to be prepared for everything...especially a surgery like this.

So what was surprising as it appears something was. Many thanks for answering in advance !

Many thanks for your detailed responses Diane (I love it) Did have a one more question for you as it seems its a hurdle I will need to overcome and prepare for. But what do you mean specifically...in terms of the emotional side of eating?

I know eating is emotional...but it appears you had some major emotional withdrawls...from not being able to eat the foods you used to? Am I assuming this correctly? Feel free to elaborate...about the emotional "battle" that one may have to face after they get this surgery. Hope you understand my desire to know this....as I want to gleam from people who have ALOT OF EXPERIENCE with this TOOL in the body......

I love learning from well seasoned vets to ancipate as much as I can so I can adjust my mindset as much as possible pre-surgery. Hope you understand....this surgery is getting closer and I'm getting a little nervous.

Blessings,

Chris

I do eat healty from time to time. I need to find a new eating pattern. Any good suggestions? But i guess the beers that i drink every weekend is killing me. I dont lose nor gain weight. Im still stuck to 338 from 352.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
