Just had surgery yesturday

Recommended Posts

I finally went in yesturday for surgery at 1:15 pm! when i work i felt so sick to my stomach and in a lot of pain. they gave me something for it and than i couldnt keep my eyes open so they kept me over night. my left side hurt a lot where the port is and my left shoulder was hurting too. i seriously dont understand how some people leave the same day of the surgery. I can only drink 4 ounces at a time and even that feels like i'm too full. my stomach is still upset a little and i have stopped drinking anything. i'm not sure why this is since the band isnt tightened at all. my temperature is a little high and i'm suppose to cough a lot and take really deep breaths and the coughing hurts but holding a pillow to my chest area helps. and i have to get up and move around every few hours.

Yep, it hurts.

You may experience some depression at some stage too...This is all normal and your body eventually gets used to not being able to eat as much.

Let your body heal.

I got banded yesterday as well - Oct. 29 - and am feeling a bit uncomfortable. Thought it was a tight feeling in my throat but it may be the gas issue that ppl on here speak of. I am excited for my new life but also nervous about changing all the habits that go along with eating however and whenever you wish.... Thanks to this forum; it's been a tremendous help.

Hang in there- you should be feeling much better in a few days. Your band is so tight because of swelling, which will subside. Be prepared to get your appetite back. Most people need a few fills to get restriction.

Hello, I got my band on yesterday, my stomach is sore and my mouth is dry. I do get the coughing and I still have drainage. I am just so sore and is worried about not being to return to work on Tuesday. I also see were people were put on an oz restriction I did not and I am wondering if that is were some of my pain is coming from? I look forward to this journey and good luck to us all. God Bless:tongue_smilie:

I got my surgery on October 25th and it has been a rough road. The gas has been really bad. The only way I can explain it is my stomach is in a constant state of upset. Can't tell if it is hunger, full, or just swelling. I can only take about 2 ounces. Today is the first day that I can sit up for any length of time without having to lay back down. Walk, walk, walk. Don't stop taking in liquids. It will get better!

My left shoulder hurt too after surgery. Why is that? When I went to the dr he asked how my shoulder was feeling, at that time it didnt hurt so I didnt ask him why it would hurt at all. Now I wish I asked... I didnt know what that was all about.

When you go into surgery they pump your stomach up with gas, so there's a lot of gas around your organs.

(If you wanna see how they do it, it's really interesting, youtube 'lap-band' surgery)

That gas sometimes gets left behind and as a result and travels to the highest place it can usually reach - the chest or the shoulder. This results in a silly little pain as it sits there, waiting to dissolve.

People also think that the gas only reaches the top of the abdominal wall, and as there's limited nerves there is registers as shoulder pain.

Weird, eh?

Anyways, it happens to almost everyone when they have laporascopic surgery.

Someone said the other day that they were taking gas-x strips to help with gas pain (the kind that goes up to your shoulder).

I'm not sure if that'd help because it goes through the stomach, but it's worth a try maybe.

It's been rough for me too. I dont have any coughing and have to force myself to cough per doctors orders. I do this by holding a pillow to my stomach and coughing as hard as i can which isnt hard. it's important to get that stuff up from your lungs. I had the surgery on thursday and it's sunday and i'm still on the couch for the most part. i get up to walk around and make my shakes but i stay down. i'm in a lot of pain and the port site is starting to really hurt depending on what position i'm in or how i move. if i dont turn or sit up really straight my port side doesnt hurt as much. I can only take a few ozs an hour. Water is going down easier today and i still have room for the Protein shakes. i'm still not up to 64oz and i dont think i will ever be able to do that. I would have to be up drinking and sipping 24/7. i drink my Water with a spoon until my stomach feels uncomfortable, i eat my shakes with a spoon and go very slowly. once i feel full i stop. the point is to not make the stomach work to hard so take it SLOW. i find i think i'm really really hungry and after a few sips of shake i'm full. hope this helps

The most important part of healing and even being thirsty is getting up and walking. If you don't do that it takes longer to heal. I am on day 4, up and walking around a lot and feel really good. It makes me burp a lot and the coughing sucks but I do ten deep breaths every two hours to keep me clear. Good luck I am sorry you are sooo sore still.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
