Just Can't Drink these Shakes!

Recommended Posts

I started my two week Pre-Op diet today. I'm suppose to drink these nasty Protein shakes twice a day, and I can't get down the first one. Nasty taste and even nastier after taste.

Did anyone else substitue the Protein Shakes for a Protein Bar? I know those are much better? Don't think I can get through these two weeks on the shakes.< /p>

Any help you can provide is much appreciated!!

What kind of shakes are you drinking?

Are they the kind that are already mixed in a bottle or do you mix them yourself?

A lot of the Protein Shakes really are nasty, but I've found a few that I can tolerate and even like.

Anything premixed that you can just buy in the bottle tastes horrible to me, but I've grown to like Carnation Instant Breakfast(No sugar added), Unjury, and one of the brands that I found at Walmart. I mix mine with fat free milk and that makes a huge difference.

Thanks for the response Paigey! It's a powder mix from my surgeon's office. I can't mix it with milk as that is not acceptable on her pre-op diet. I will give Unjury a try. Maybe the unflavored Protein that you put in Soup would be best for me?

My surgery is next week (Oct 20th) and I wasn't told to drink any shake. However, I'm drinking them anyways as a Meal Replacement for my Breakfast right now to help with the pre-surgery weight loss . I used to workout a lot and have tried a ton of different shakes and the one I take now is by far my favorite. I bought it on Amazon.com, it's called Optimum Nutrition 100% whey Gold Standard. Check out the ratings, 4.5 stars with over 600 reviews. I got the Extreme Milk chocolate, I blend it with 1 banana, 1 cup of non-fat milk and some ice. I'm telling you it's really good. Plus it's 24g of Protein and only 1g of sugar and 3g of carbs. I'm telling you, just compare the nutritional fact to other Proteins. Anyways, just thought I'd add my .02 cents.

Unjury also has a chicken soup flavored Protein that's pretty good. I've used it in a few Soups and sauces. I'm getting ready to order the unflavored Unjury too, so I can try it in yogurt, cottage cheese and stuff like that.

The brand I have been drinking is the powdered brand Super Advanced whey Protein. So far have been drinking the Cookies and cream and the vanilla flavors. I really like both of them but there are times when I have a hard time wanting to get anything else into me for the day and I have been making frozen smoothies with them instead of just drinking plain. Mixed with some Water, then I throw that in my smoothie maker with some ice and sometimes half a banana or a few strawberries. YUM. I particularly like the vanilla this way, I also splash in a bit of vanilla extract.

I tried mixing in some Jello Gelatin powder into one two nights ago thinking that might be something for variety but I hated it, won't do that again.

Next I might try picking up some SF Torani sryup or some from Natures Flavors site to put in the vanilla for a new flavor.

Maybe you could try it as a frozen smoothie and see if you like it that way?

Protein Shakes never taste as good as real food. Think of it as Coke vs Diet coke. Most people the first time they drink a diet drink hate it.... but then you acquire a taste for it. My pre-op diet starts next Monday and I just bought my Protein at GNC a couple of hours ago.

Try making your own protien shake. I used to use Greek yogurt and a scoop of Protein powder and some frozen fruit and blend it all up . . . it is so good. You can also use any other yogurt that is high in Protein.< /p>

Definitely take this pre-op opportunity to find a Protein Shake you like...you will be living off of them post-op! I use EAS Advantage Carb pre-mixed that I get from Walmart and Publix. I have also used the Pure Protein Powder in vanilla and chocolate. Try using sugar-free pudding or flavored extracts for extra flavor.

The big question is what nutritional standards your doctor wants you to keep. You mentioned not being allowed to have fat free milk. That can make a huge difference to the flavor. Adding ingrediants like sugar free pudding powder and sugar free Syrup can really help as well. There can be a wide range of nurtritional values of Protein powder depending on style and brand. I second the Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard I buy the double chocolate flavor (at Vitamin shoppe). I would compare the stats of the Protein your doctor wants you to use to the Optimum Nutrition and see if ON is equal to or better than the doctors. Perhaps you can get the doctor to approve a different brand.

My doctor wanted me to do HMR 500; 5, 100 calorie shakes a day. They ended up giving me an alergic reaction and I was not loosing weight. If I am doing an hour of cardio a day and only consuming 500 calories I had BETTER lose weight.

I feel for you Angel, I started my pre-op diet yesterday. It consists of advantage bariatric shakes. They are powder and only Water can be added. It's like lumpy hot chocolate only cold and with no sugar. It's horrid. I'm allowed up to 160 cals of sf Jello, sf popsicles, and broth. I nearly gag with each shake. I have to drink 6 of these a day. Yesterday i drank 5. I couldn't do another without vomiting i dont think... I'm gonna do it though. I refuse to give up! We can do this together ;o)

I used a premixed shake made by mix1. They have no milk and are all fruit flavors. I was able to get them at my local grocery store. They were very good.

I drink chocolate Unjury. I think they are soo good! To mix it up a little I add a few drops of extract. I've used peppermint and almond extracts and think they are wonderful. Yesterday I bought more extracts to try: strawberry, cherry, orange, coconut. I'm excited to try them. Once I buy a hand immersion blender I plan on adding a banana (or 1/2 of one). You do have to mix up the drink pretty well so all the powder is disolved.

What is the consistancy of Unjury shakes? Are they thick or more thin like liquid?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
