August Rush in bandland!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

here's my update:

Finally had my first fill on Monday. My loss had slowed down to only losing a pound in the 9 days before the fill! But i'm glad I didn't gain!

Fill went well, had this lump in my throat feeling but it's gone now. I'm keeping my portions small and I have not been feeling hungry in between meals so it's been great so far! Before the fill, I was starting to get ravenous between meals!

As of yesterday, I am down 76 pounds :w00t: Size wise, I went from a 26/28 to an 18/20 now!

Keep up the good my fellow august bandsters!!

Tara - I'm scheduled for a fill on the 4th, and I've been debating on rather or not to get it done either. I will hold off on making the final decision until the 2nd or 3rd, but as of right now, I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to get one. I think I'm at my "sweet spot" right now. I can go 4 hours without feeling hungry. I can actually go longer. I just know that I need to eat. The amount of food that I'm able to eat has dropped since my last fill. I don't want to be any tighter.

I went to Kohl's last night, and I'm having a mental block. I can not believe that I've lost enough weight to fit in smaller sizes. I never liked to try on clothes, but I know that I need to because right now I have no idea what size I wear. All I know is that 24s are getting way to big. I can take 24s off without unbuttoning them and pull them right back up. Last night I wouldn't try on any thing because I was afraid that they would be too small, so I ended up not getting any thing. I need to get over this block because I'm going to be running around naked soon.

I'm not feeling hungry but not feeling full. My portion restriction is only from my being careful. I guess I'll ask doc if I should fill. Anyone have this??

Tara

You're probably real close to your sweet spot.

I notice that when I am going past my capacity I start to hiccup or burp. I think I read somewhere that those actions are a sign that you've eaten to your capacity or maybe a little over.

I shouldn't have tried to answer this but that's my opinion :)

Dee

I have a question for you guys. Ever since my fill on Tuesday I'm burping constantly. Why is that?

I just ate a small piece of pork chop and some purple hull peas. I'm still hungry but I don't want to push it so I'll wait awhile first and see if I'm still hungry.

I burp a lot too especially when I am almost full. I either burp or hiccup.

So I see the doc on tuesday and hope to get another fill. I have lost 2 lbs in 9 weeks! I don't get it. Very frustrating.

Okay here's my biggest downfall EVER!

I'm not getting enough Protein in:( I was hungry just now and I haven't had supper yet so instead of eating something with protein I really wanted some popcorn with my movie. I knew my stomach wouldn't hold both so I ate a 100 calorie bag of popcorn instead. Now I'm full and I have no room for anything else.

Ok so I have 1.5 cc in my 10 cc band and for the first time I got stuck!!! Not a good feeling at all. I did something stupid though....I was out picking up my son from college from 3pm to 7pm and starving, so when I got home I planned on having soup..something fast to make...My husband got little ceasars pizza and breadsticks, so while my Soup was cooking I figured I would have a bite of a breadstick..well I guess I ate it too fast and it just didn't go down. I have always gotten the full feeling before when I eat, but this was nothing like it. I couldn't swollow even my own saliva!! finally after about 15 mins it came up, but what an awful experience. I really need to not wait till I am starving to eat. Needless to say I didn't eat my soup after...and even the next day I had a hard time eating. Now I am a little nervous about getting another fill. I know its that I ate fast and didn't chew good I just thought my band would have to be fuller to get stuck like that!!!

Flew to California on Saturday, and I was so happy. I didn't have any spillage into the seat next to me. I was flying with my family, so the kids were sitting beside me. I didn't have to raise the arm of my seat to make for a more comfortable ride. I was also able to sit in a bathtub without hitting the sides. My MIL was able to hug me and reach all the way around. These people don't eat but 2 meals a day though. Breakfast and something around 2 to 4 PM. It is really causing havoc with my diet.

Tylee, does your family know about your surgery? If they do tell them you need to eat every 4 hours; otherwise tell them your doctor told you to eat that way to keep your blood sugar stable. My mother keeps the same kind of schedule. She knows however that my sister and I inherited low blood sugar from our dad. If we go to long without eating we get faint and it is dangerous. I would personally buy greek yoghurt or turkey sandwich meat so that even if everyone else is not having a meal you can have concentrated Protein Snacks. I think our society has this misinformed idea that if you eat fewer meals thats good for you. It's not. If your car has no fuel it won't run. If our bodies don't have fuel they shut down too.

Amanda, I took my meds in the morning on an empty stomach and I got so sick also. I think its because our stomach is so much smaller maybe? So now I wait till dinner and take my meds and its so much better. It happened twice to me a week apart so I know its the meds.

Mine have to be taken on an empty stomach though. It's not so bad if I space them out a little it just takes longer for me to be able to eat breakfast.

Hey everyone. I see a lot has gone on since I was last here. However, it sounds like you guys are doing much better!

So I am still very slowly losing, however I will say when I was on my menstrual cycle I definitely gained and was very scared. It made me feel like I was going to be the type of person that the band was just not going to work. I am still very iffy about all of this. I am down around 50 lbs, but, my cloths are not fitting any better. How is this? The only real difference is that my double chin is a baby double chin now lol, and I am very giggly. Before I was big but solid, now my fat is well squishy. Maybe this is tmi but it's just all weird. I go for a second fill Friday. I am excited about that because I really stink at the portion sizes. I still eat a lot less but still eat more than I should. Okay enough of me rambling. Do any of you live in FL?

In regards to portion sizes at least for Protein I weigh everything. Even on a small plate sometimes 3 oz does not seem like a lot. Soooo I know if I was'nt weighing I would put way to much. You can get a nice digital scale for like $20 at Target or Walmart. I also use it to measure out 10 g of Cereal for my morning yoghurt.

I was banded on 8/11. I lost 10 lb waiting for ins approval, 10 lbs on the liquid diet before surgery and 10 lbs in the week after. since then I have lost 4 lbs. !!!!!!!!! It's been 2 months!!

I saw the doc today and he said that he was not displeased with my progress!! I told him I was!! He is going to do a second fill next tuesday for me and hopefully that will get me moving. In the meantime I need to get on a better exercise schedule even though he was not concerned about my exercise.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
