What, exactly, does the liver ?shrinking? in the pre-op diet?

There seem to be many variations of “the” pre-op diet, some all protein shake liquids, some extreme low carb, some south beach, some medifast, some two shakes plus small frozen dinner, and some have none at all. . .

But all seem to say they are for liver shrinking. Does anyone have any actual information to explain this? Is it low fat, or low carb, or just low cal that supposedly shrinks the liver?

When you eat calories than you burn they need to be stored in the body. Some gets stored as fat on your face, arms, bottom. Some of this excess gets stored in the liver. The liver being your second largest organ can hold lots of substance. A high protein low fat/carb diet helps your body "burn" excesses stored in the liver.
