Worried about Weight Gain on Mushies

After being banded 1.5 weeks, my doctor decided to move me from liquids to mushies. I was enjoying the great weight loss on the liquid diet and not getting hungry. I'm worried about gaining weight on mushies and solid foods. The doc indicated that I should be on solid foods my next appointment. Are my worries unfounded? He indicated I shouldn't worry about calorie counts, just recognizing feelings of fullness.

I don't know what to think of expect.

Hmm interesting question. Most people are dying to get off liquids!!! As far as gaining on mushies I wouldn't worry- weight loss does seem to slow down a bit for most folks, but as long as you make good food choices you shouldn't be gaining. The band is designed to work with real, solid food. If you aren't eating solid food it is possible that your doc won't give you a fill. That being said I would be lying if I didn't say that I wish I had stayed on liquids a bit longer than I did....

I'm about as far out as you are, and was also switched to pureed/mushies.

I'm still taking in 1-2 Protein shakes per day right now, and then eating 1-2 meals per day. Getting the Protein in on mushies is hard, but I'm experimenting a bit and so far so good.

I definitely add powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored Protein powder to any Soup I have, and I'm either going homemade, or I searched for ones that were gentle on the diet.

pureed chicken breast has been good in some Soups to add some substance and protein.

I also took about 1/2 cup fat-free refried Beans and topped it with seasoned pureed chicken breast (I had to add broth to the chicken until I got it to the right consistency), then added a packet of Taco Bell sauce on top for flavor, a little dollop of fat free sour cream, and a sliver of avocado. Yum!

One other that I think I'm going to tweak some, but is pretty tasty as-is is a noodle free lasagna of sorts. 1/2 cup fat free ricotta cheese, topped with pureed healthy spaghetti sauce with browned ground turkey in it. (all pureed together). I think I need to season the ricotta some, though.

I've eaten soft-cooked salmon too without pureeing it, but chewing it VERY thoroughly. 1% cottage cheese or WW fat free vanilla yogurt for Breakfast. I think I'm going to give mushy-cooked scrambled eggs a shot soon too.

So far, I've definitely felt full at somewhere between 1 and 1.5 cups of food, though it's not lasting as long as I hope it will once the food is not totally mush.

My toaster oven has definitely come in handy for cooking up small portion sizes - I can see it getting a lot of use in the months to come! Meals like the pseudo-lasagna were made with leftovers from me feeding my kids spaghetti. They get the Pasta with non-pureed sauce and meat, I get it my way.

I'm sure I'll find more things that work for me as I get farther along, I've only had a few days to start my food science! *laugh*

Good luck, and check the mushies sticky post in the food section here too! Even some of those recipes that are looking to use butter and heavy cream (what?!?) should be easy enough to modify to be healthier. :)

I am 10 days out and can't wait to get some real "mushy" food in. Curvy, you're making my mouth

water :smile2:. I already have my 1st day (Wed) almost planned. Soft Scrambled eggs. I like the mock lasagna idea alot!! and I'll probably have a shake or 2.

I picked my 1st greens (Kale, Collards baby Choi, Vitagreens) from my garden today, used 1 t. olive oil, the greens, 1 C. Water, garlic & onion powder and simmered until tender. Made a sauce of 1 C. Milk, 1/2 C. cooking liquid, 1 T. Flour w S & P wisked together. Purreed the greens and mixed together. If I have to put unflavored Protein in it, I will!! Okay , enough of that :)

I am 12 days post op and both my surgeon and my nutritionist said (repeatedly) that I should NOT be paying attention to losses or gains during my recovery period. In fact, they told me not to even get on the scale between my surgery and my first fill (4-6 weeks post op!!!)

Of course, I haven't listened to that, :) but I don't expect the weight I have lost to stick around. I was on full liquids for one week, mushies for one week and have just started progressing to soft foods.

I do expect to GAIN between now and my first fill. I also know that between my first fill and however many fills it takes me to get to my sweet spot, I, not the band, will be doing most of the hard work in terms of watching what and how much I eat.

I know it can be discouraging, but the whole point is to eventually EAT properly, in small amounts and be satisfied. Now is the time for healing, not weighing. :smile2:

Thanks for the advice, guys. I guess I will keep working the program and worry about the weight loss after my first fill. The initial weight loss is a nice benefit though :smile2: I'm quite enjoying clothes falling off. They were already getting lose from my pre-surgery diet. I lost over 20 pounds on that one.:)

I totally agree that we should focus on healing, BUT that does not mean we should just take this as an opportunity to get in a bunch of slider foods we won't get to have after we're healed.

There is no reason why we can't use this time to both heal AND make healthy choices.

I don't even have a functional scale right now to check my weight, so I'm not focused on my weight. I'm focused on both healing AND making the changes in the way that I eat and think that will carry me through for LIFE. There is no way that I'm going to lose time or headway on my progress just because I'm on mushies.

I'm in this for the long haul, but I'm not going to sabotage myself by making that haul any longer than necessary.

Just my take on it. :)

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

        I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.
