I believe attitude is everything. Not just with the band but with life in general.. Everyone please keep in mind that our perception of time gets screwed up when we get the band. It is sort of like when we are under 10 years old and we can't stand it until we are another year older. We measure our years in fractions!!! "I am 4 1/2 years old. We are never 36 1/2 years old. The minute we get banded, we want to be skinny tomorrow. When we get told we need to wait to get to restriction, we are like the 4 year old. We want it now. Granted this period of time is much longer for some than others, but getting negative about it, only makes it worse. It is extremely important to stay positive and to keep looking for ways to make it work, instead of ways to thwart our progress!! It will work. Do your part and try not to get too caught up in the time thing.... Hugs to all......

Your words are sooo true!!! Inspirational!!! Thanks I needed to read this right now....Hugs back...

I feel the same way, I wish I had seen this site prior to surgery on 3/15/10. My expectations were all wrong. I expected to lose 5lbs a week. I went for my first fill this past Wednesday and he was like, you should be losing 1.5-2 lbs a week. I thought to myself, now you tell me after I have stressed and felt like a failure for the past 5 weeks. I lost 7 lbs the first week and have lost 23.5 lbs. total (9 pre-op and 14.5 post-op). I have been walking for the past 3 weeks and he told me to start doing full body workouts. This post is much needed because I posted my discouraged thread a couple weeks ago. Thanks so much!!!

I had my first fill (4ccs) on 4/28/10 and can not tell much difference at all. I guess it will take a couple more fills. We are all in this together. Thanks so much for sharing. I need all of this information to stay sane.

I cannot tell you how happy I am that this thread is helping some of our fellow bandsters...it just puts a smile on my face.

I have to admit that I started this thread out of sheer frustration at seeing the same posts, by different posters, over and over again. I did hope that it could be a place where people could read what to expect and that they are not alone.

I am SO INCREDIBLY inspired by each and every one of you, I could never thank you enough. This journey continues long after the first 6 months, year, 2 years etc., and finding those with the same issues is SO therapeutic.

Thank you to everyone who thanked me for this thread, but you are my inspiration and I must thank you!

I can truly feel the "weight lifting" off some of you by reading the words posted here.

I sincerely hope you take these words and information to heart and don't feel like you're not living up to your own, or anyone else's expectations. I've felt that way too!!! No one noticed my weight loss for 8 months and I beat myself up like no one else could. I thought I wasn't doing it right, and this was something else I was just going to fail at. Let me tell you, we can end this journey before it even begins by letting our thoughts, or others opinions dampen our spirit...don't do it!

Know that this is a much slower process than RNY (also less invasive) and it has it's own benefits and deficiencies. If you are FULLY aware of what to REALISTICALLY expect, you WILL SUCCEED!!

Keep up the positive thoughts, exercise, proper eating/nutrition and hard work...you're doing GREAT!!!!!

VERY GOOD POST!!!!

........"BANDSTER HELL".........!!!!! SPOT ON.

I was banded in January lost a lot pre and post op and started putting it all back on since.

Was given loads of preop advice but no postop and have had to do all my learning on this site...a lot of very experienced bandsters here, i must take my hat off to them!! otherwise i would still be in the dark.

Because i did not see instant results i started warring with hospital and staff....saying things like i want this thing taken out.....i deliberately did not eat correctly as i was constantly trying to test band by eating Kentucky drinking loads of wine etc....demanding where is this restriction?? i have a duff band!! suing etc....haha

Then after them calming me down at 2nd fill ( up to 6cc) and telling me it will come be patient...i deliberately went out and pigged out in a temper tantrum!!

Then i was eating as per norm about a week ago and it started working i could not hold my food down and was sick......!!!

I am now starting to have problems with bread and all the symptoms are starting to kick in like having to chew food longer in order to get it down.

I do not have proper restriction but i feel i am on the verge and the next fill i feel will do it.

Now all clinics etc always try to hammer home diet and never tell you about x amount of fills to restriction because they are right diet is the most important.

However if i knew more about postop Bandster hell, restriction etc i would have made more of an effort with diet rather than giving up and going back to Kentucky etc because i thought it was not working........i would have been ahead rather than having to start now with my weight loss......however as stated everyone is different!!.....and i should have had more faith.

Throwing tantrums? Pigging out to see how much your band can hold? We all want weight loss but yelling at the doctor's and staff when you gorging on KFC - really??! I own up to my slow weight loss: I should've done my own research instead of having blinders on thinking I would have biggest loser type weight loss. It is MY fault and I honestly haven't ate the best food either either but yelling at the doctor's office is something I haven't done since I was 8.

I'm mot even banded yet, and I want to say "Thank you!" to this thread. I think all pre-op people should read it; also the people involved in our health care.

OK...here's my 2 cents. Not many know about bandster hell and I think this post should be in pre-op. This is a good post, this is a place were we can all voice our opinions. The most important message I heard through out the whole process is the band is a tool! I'm on a low carb, high Protein diet pre-op and post-op. It's the diet that my doctor wants me on to use my tool. If you expect to just drop the weight without doing your part, you're going to be dissappointed. Again I had a tool put in my body. My body needs to heal. Once it heals, the tool will start working better. Most importantly, I have to do the work and the tool is going to help me (not do the work for me). I'm losing b/c I've change my eating habits, not b/c I have a band. I wish all of the bandsters well ...everyone is different and we will therefore lose weight differently.

I've noticed that most posts that mention dissatisfaction with the band are from people that self pay. Maybe their Dr's are so struck by those immediate dollar signs that they just want to get in there and get that surgery money without telling the whole story. Going through insurance slows the process down, gives you time to think, research and learn. It also weeds out people who are not mentally capable of handling such a big change.

Thanks for this post, and thankfully I was prepared for Bandster hell by Dr. Vincent Lusco and the supportive staff at St. Mary's and Elizabeth's hospital (Debbie and Kim, and Lana) in Ky. Love these guys!

Funny because I am a self pay, and I thought the opposite. I thought people who were insurance pay were less grateful because of less out of pocket expense. Deep down I really think it is an individual thing. Some are just not ready for probably a million different reasons. Some just don't do their homework, some do the homework and only take in the information that supports what they want to do anyway. Hugs!!!

Is there any way to copy or move this thread to pre-op or should I just start a new thread there?

Thank you a million times over for posting this. I am on week 5 post op, down 9-10 pounds, depending on the day, and am just NOW starting to accept that this is my HEALING time, not weightloss period. I am looking forward to month 6 when I can (hopefully) look back on this post and be happy with my choice to get lapband. I wish I had done it earlier!

I chose Dr. Simpson here in AZ, because he is the leading surgeon for LapBand in the West, and thought that by choosing HIM I would be hit with the REALITY of the lapband and how it works and what to REALISTICALLY expect. Although I am happy with my surgeon choice, I have to say that his initial consult was far less informative of realistic expectations than I had hoped. Having said that, I know that there are several support groups that he offers that I have NOT attended. I believe the irrational and unrealistic expectations I had on losing a lot of weight right away are my fault for not better educating myself. I know that this is a tool, and I know that there are support/informative meeting groups out there to help me understand how to use this new tool, yet I have not made the choice to attend.

I did make the decision when I got the lapband to NOT tell anyone who didn't need to know. I only told my sister, my husband, and my boot camp trainer, because I didn't want to be watched like a hawk or judged for the time it took me to lose the weight.

I don't know if there is a way to do that, but I am thinking it is good to have it in both places!! It is doing lots of good here so I hate to see it go!!! Hugs!!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
