Hey February 2010 Bandsters!

Recommended Posts

I had my first post op visit this week. I am having no real pain anymore and the liquids are no longer keeping me satisfied. I started mushies and will log how I am doing to gear things toward my first fill on March 17. I have noticed the scale has come to a screetching halt. I am planning on adding some stationary bike riding to the mix this week so maybe that will jump start things back to continue weight loss.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Hi all! I'm going in tomorrow for my band!! I'm excited (though I'll probably be nervous tomorrow morning.) Mine will be done out-patient-- barring any complications, of course.

I hope all of you who went today are resting and recovering well!

Jen - sending good luck for tomorrow. You will do fine, like all of us and we'll look for your return to the boards when you are ready.

I was banded on the 24th of Feb. The only real problem that I can honestly say is the fact that I caught a really bad head cold. This probally occurred in the OR, as it is usually kind of cold in there. I was so congested to the point that i could not sleep.

I was given the single incision banding. i have literally no pain tht i can say was unbearable. the pain that i do have is as if i did about 20 sit ups-muscle pain. The evening after the surgery i walked around the hospital floor twice. Of course the gassy feeling was there but....

My current weight before banding was at 250. i am from NYC. I was banded at Methodist hospital-self pay the staff was really great. After the surgery, while in recovery the entire team visited me to tell me what a great job I did. overall, I HAD A GOOD EXPIERENCE. As FOR MY NEW DIET ROUTINE, i am following this to the max. if the hungry monster tries to attack, he will need to kiss his own as.. good bye. I am not in the mood to visit any emergency room for a peice of meat to be dislodged from my gut:drool: and trying to throw up on the way to the hospital. So i am doing the juice Water, clear liquid thing.

Please excuse the improper caps.

Just a few things to think about if you have not been banded yet.

1. Have them put your IV in your NON-dominant hand, especially if you have an over night stay. (It makes bathroom trips much easier - among other things)

2. IF you experience blurry vision after the surgery it may not be the pain meds but a motion sickness patch that they have put behind your ear (if they give you that).

3. Neck pillow was nice to have.

Best of Luck to you all.

Sunny,

I feel you on following the diet. My girlfriend got banded 2 weeks before me, she has been eating regular food. I'm trying to be a success story and follow the rules. This website really helps.

how is she eating regular foods only after two weeks? Tell her that she is defeating the purpose and wasting funds. That is one of the reasons why you are sent for a psychological evaluation so that it is understood that this is all up to you--the band can do it for you alone. Moreover, she is waiting her time by not listening to herself and the band. She must be getting sick??

I was banded yesterday (February 25)! I'm self-pay, so my surgery done as out-patient. The surgery was at 8:00 a.m., and I was home by 4:00 p.m. I've been lucky not to have any gas pain. My incisions are pretty sore when I'm laying down, so I didn't sleep very well last night. I've walked a lot because that seems to make me feel better. I have a follow-up visit with the surgeon this morning. I haven't had as much pain as I thought I would, and I plan on returning to work on Monday. I'm excited to be starting a new life!

My doctor released me at two weeks to start working in all foods - even bread and meats, oh my!

The purpose behind this is to see how restricted I am and he will adjust the first fill (in about three weeks) according to what I can handle. I'm eating healthy and my portions are way, way smaller than they used to be. I eat Protein first and then work in veggies, etc... if I can. The "rules" may change after my fills but we all know the doctors orders vary greatly on here.

Wow, lucky you--no gas??? gas is my problem, not the incision:redface:. I have a bubble in the center of my chest that just won't seem to move.. I'm walking doing some small side bends and twist. Hopefully soon it will go

Help - give me an example of Protein you are eating. Is it easy for you to swallow?

I am on Clear Liquids for two weeks-or as per the instructions. I have no problems swallowing. If you are expierencing any problems with swallowing, you should immediately call your physician. Most of the research i have seen where a persons has problems swallowing is because of the foods they are eating. I think 2 weeks was and still is too soon to eat solid foods--pureed or not. Again, this is based on the research that i have seen on various sites. here is a link which will offer you a wealth of information as to Protein Drinks as per the ""Bariatric dieting requirements"

Bariatric Liquid Protein & RTD's For A Gastric Bypass Surgery Diet

your local health food stores may have the items as well. I am terrified to eat any solid or mushed foods. I want to stay on the clear for at least two weeks and graduate to say --baby food texture. This will give the stomach time to heal and avoid regurgitation (i hope).

I also had my first post op appt. yesterday. Since he trimmed some of the stitches up so they are no longer poking at me or rubbing my clothing - no more pain!! Woo hoo!!

I'm with you - liquids aren't doing much for me! I can start yogurt and puddings, etc. now. But I, too, have noticed the scale not moving anymore! They told me it's because I've only been getting 300 - 400 calories a day. My dietician said I MUST increase my calories to at least 800, preferably 1200 a day. She was actually surprised that I had lost as much as I had - which, BTW was less than what my home scale...err.

Good luck to you! I have a feeling we're both gonna need it in the weeks to come!

It's official. Had surgery yesterday and I'm home today. Had a little gas pain Monday which I burped up while walking the hospital floors. No gas by Monday evening. No nausea at all. Incisions are sore, particularly the port, but nothing above a three or four. Had cotton mouth really bad. Started taking liquid Lortab for pain which is making me very drowsy. So, I may just try tylenol instead. Everything went great and I'm so thankful. Wednesday I start 7 days of full liquids then on to puree. Everyone's body is different, but this surgery was pretty much a cinch for me.

Good luck everyone and I hope your experience is as good as mine was.

My surgery ended up being similar to yours. I'm so happy.

I had my surgery yesterday. I got to the hospital at 6:00 am and was in the pre-op area until about eight. My surgean team came in to see me before time. they were awesome. A bariatric representative came in to inform me of local groups to join. When the surgery started I was unware. I only remember them taking me into the surgery room. When I woke up, I had to keep asking if the surgery was over. I couldn't believe how great I was feeling. I thought I was going to vomit when I made it to the restoom but only a big burp came up. They took an x-ray of me swallowing some chalky like liquid to ensure that everything was in place. I experienced no gas pains, only soreness at the port and other incisions. The only thing that caught me off guard was the fact that I have about six incisions. On the first day, I drank some Water a an eighth cup of broth. Today has been similar, but I will make a shake to drink some time today. It's what my doctor wants. I will see my surgeon in a month. I don't know why I was so nervous. It was a breeze and overall I feel pretty great.

Congrats jmunks! I'm glad everything went smoothly for you. I was so scared too but the surgery wasn't bad at all. I'm now in the process of getting used to all the new sensations in my stomach, some of which aren't the most pleasant, but nothing unbearable. Let me know how you do on the diet in the next couple weeks. :cursing:

Hey post-op February bandsters -- how are you all doing?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
