So...I tried a Diet Dr. Pepper, so excited that I got the clearance from my doctor. I had two sips and turns out I couldn't stand it! My mouth hated the feel of the bubbles in my mouth. Didn't hurt when it got to my stomach at all, just hated the taste. So even though my doctor cleared me and he says soda is fine it seems my days with soda are officially over.

I have never been a big soda drinker, only when having my mixed drinks and that is only once in a while.

Last month I was on a cruise and was drinking Key West Coolers, (Passion fruit juice, Watermelon Syrup and Cranberry juice with a splash of Sprite, honestly the Sprite was maybe a shot glass full.) The drinks were good, the fruit juices were very good and I had 1 or 2 a day.

I have to admit maybe it was the small amounts that I had of the Sprite, but it didn't hurt.

I did manage to lose 3 lbs on the cruise also, which was great.

What about non carbonated alcoholic drinks, such as Amaretto Sours? I haven't been banded yet but I enjoy this drink once or twice a month. I'm also a Pepsi addict but am looking forward to kicking that habit.

Blessings, Michelle

do you think beer and sparkling wine (champagne) should be avoided for the same reasons of carbonated drinks? I think you should be able to drink reasonable amounts of both every once in while without compromising your goal. I think the secret has always been to eat and drink a little bit of everything in moderation. Which by the way is a lot more fun!

pliberati: The makers of the band even suggest that you don't drink any carbonated drinks. It can cause band erosion.

Of course, there's always someone that will break the rules to suit themselves. It's up to you if you want to run the risk. Also, remember, not all doctors know what they're talking about. Let one of them get sued over this issue and you'll hear a different story from the physicians.

Lolly,

Just curious...the band is on the outside of our stomach. How does drinking carbonated drinks erode the band?

Personally, I've taken this as an opportunity to give up on carbonated drinks and I used to buy a 12 pack of sugar free pop every week.

I don't drink soda. Soda is just plain bad for you as it leeches the Calcium from your bones. I gave it up before surgery and it was so hard so I decided never to go back!

I don't drink soda anymore, a few months after being banded, I was out to dinner with my family; we were eating in a dimly lit restaurant, and halfway through the meal, I reached down to get a drink of my Water, and without realizing it, grabbed my fiance's diet coke and when I drank it it just tasted nasty. I guess after not drinking soda for a long time, you forget how it tastes, but to me it just tasted way too sweet and the carbonation made it bitter and it almost stings your mouth and throat. Anyway, a few minutes after doing that, my stomach started to hurt so. Buy anyway, that was the first, last, and probably only time I will drink soda with my lap band... Oh, and if you're wondering why I was drinking with my meals, I always get Water when I go out just in case my food is hot and/or spicy, but this time it was because my food was spicy.

I haven't had soda since the surgery and I don't miss it. I will have a couple sips of champagne that I've let go flat at special occasions, but other than that no carbonation. My surgeon was very adamant about that and I found out why!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
