A Confession

Recommended Posts

Last night I was at our local Mexican restaurant, sure enough something got stuck, could have been that nacho w/cheese, anyway, off to the restroom I went. All I have to do is bend at the waist and the pressure pushes the stuck object right out, then it's back to the table. I really do try to avoid that feeling though, I can only imagine the damage to my throat and esophagus.

Minutes prior to my last fill, I told my doctor I had just gotten to a point where I didn't have to sit by the restroom door in restaurants.

Oh Kare! No, I don't do this, but my DH does. I rarely get things stuck like that, since I'm almost obsessive with "chewing to goo". I've only had a couple of PBs that didn't end with me dry heaving and leaving me feeling sick for hours or days.

It always freakes me out a bit when my DH does this because I know what happens in my body, but he doesn't have this same issue I do.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend you when I mentioned counseling.

No, you didn't offend me Margo. I'm sure for some things and some people that's good advice. You really have no way of knowing from my post how experienced or knowledgeable I am about this.

If there is anything I have learned over the years, it is that sharing the WL experience with other people going thru the same thing is about the most valuable assist there is!

I suppose the whole counseling--as well as "ask a doctor"-- sort of advice hits a sore spot with me in that I think our society gives them both more credence than just having a degree should. There are plenty of knowledgable people w/o degrees and plenty of degreed idiots. (I know when I was at UCSB years ago some of the worst teachers I ever had were PhDs.) I REALLY HATE hearing what some of our LBT members have to go thru as far as proving YEARS of WL programs, counseling and all that to get insurance approval. Say what you will about going to MX, at least they let you be responsible for your own decisions.

But... that IS a whole different subject, isn't it?

:)

Anyway, hope I didn't over-react.

Sometimes I chew and spit but not often. I don't like the pb feeling, I feel terrible and it can take so long for it to come back out. Do you feel bad or does it hurt before you pb? For me the terrible feeling keeps me straight. When I start to have a full feeling I have to stop eating. A lot of times I don't want to stop but I know I HAVE TO. At this point I have to get away from the food and do something else. What kills me is that I can't drink after I have eaten something. I love Water.< /p>

I bring this up only because no one else has mentioned it yet - you all DO know that the acceptable "safe" practice after a PB is liquids only until the next meal?

Even a little PB can irritate the stoma and cause swelling, and get you into a vicious cycle. PBs are to be avoided at all costs.

Ducking shoes... :)

I just posted another subject in the food section earlier today. I have found myself doing this (chew and spit) and I was wondering if I was the only one who did that. I don't know if it is a bad habit but it gives me the satisfaction of tasting a certain food but not absorbing all the calories. I have on occasion pb and it came back up but not on purpose I really don't feel safe doing that because I am afraid of the band slipping. Eventhough when my doctor did my procedure he put stiches around the band giving it a better attachment to my stomach to prevent it from slipping.

"URP." Go ad that to the LBT dictionary, because that's exactly what I do on occasion. It's not a burp, and it's not vomiting. I can't see how it harms the band since it's just food that's stuck in my throat. An urp (in my book) comes from the back of the throat. It's like a burp with a kick. food sits in my throat, so I just kinda gulp a little air and force it out with an URP. I never drink Water to force it up though because I had my worst PB episode thinking Water would help, and it hurt like hell.

Kare, the only thing I'm going to judge you on is that you enjoy the taste! AAAHHHH!

Hey Delarla, I did Pleasure Company parties for awhile. Is it the same as what you do. It was a lot of fun. I'm thinking about getting into it again it would help with airfare expenses for fills that's for sure. Robin

Yeah, let's add it to the dictionary. Maybe it's been said before but I have to give Jack credit for the first time I saw it.

As for "enjoying the taste"... well, it would hardly be a confession w/o some humiliation would it??

I guess if I'm the only one willing to stand up and admit to grossness my sholders are broad enough to carry that mantle with pride. (lol!)

Lisa, I do the URP thing too. I thought it was just me! Sometimes it does feel like the food is in my throat & only an URRP will get it down. I thought only my kids could make themselves burp!

This thread is scaring me (I'm not banded yet). Is this something I have to "look forward to" or can it be avoided? Tried "bulemia" in high school...not wanting to try it (in any form) again.

Help! :think

Of course it can be avoided. Just don't do it.

As I have said before, this isn't something I do everyday. I ended up doing it 2 days in a row and yes, it concerns me. If it didn't, I wouldn't have brought it up. After all, THIS IS THE PLACE TO COME TALK ABOUT OUR CONCERNS.

I don't want to scare anybody, but I certainly don't want to not talk about something because it might scare someone or because I might risk a judgemental attitude. It bothers me that besides the people participating in this thread I have had several other people contact me in personal messages saying they sometimes engage in this behavior but don't want to talk about it publicly.

If we don't talk about these things and risk being uncomfortable, how will we learn?

I wasn't saying don't talk about it... just wanted to know. It seems like PBing is common, and all I'm really concerned with is... can I avoid it in general? I'm still in this phase of deciding on what doc to use, not whether or not to get the band. I will do this, I just want to have as much amo as I can going in, so I appreciate your bringing this up. Sorry if I offended you.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
