Pre-Op "Last Supper" Syndrome?!?!?

Recommended Posts

Hey all!!! So everything is set... two weeks from today I will be banded and can't wait! Here's my question - and I already know it's self-defeating, but I'm having a serious mental challenge wanting to eat -everything- that I (1) haven't been able to following WW for 3+ years and (2) that I probably won't be able to eat after being banded... it's as if my brain thinks I had better have it now while I can... now, I suppose in small doses, this might not be horrible, for example, yesterday I purchased the baked Cheetoes vs. the really bad deep-fried ones, and didn't eat the whole bag or anything, but I don't want to gain weight before the surgery. Did anyone else experience this??? How did you deal with it? I guess this is the first

question of many that I'll have - thanks to everyone...

I was really bad before I started my pre-op diet! I was feeling this "seperation anxiety" I guess you could call it from all the food I was felt I was going to be giving up. I took about three days and ate everything I wanted, as much as I wanted. The strangest thing happend...I did not binge at all, I guess because the food was not off limits my body and brain got together. Anyway...I do not think there is a thing wrong with what your feeling, have your Cheetoes and be happy!

Thanks Terrilen! I think that's a great suggestion - I've read similar things in the past, now that you mention it... just give in and get it over with... I'll have to do my best and hope the next 2 weeks pass quickly!!

I had the last supper syndrome and fortunate for me my doctor did not require a pre op diet, I ate carnitas, Beans, rice and tortillas in TJ the night before my surgery. Remember though once you are banded you will stil lget to enjoy food but in much smaller quantities, this is what I love about the band, I get to still enjoy food and yet lose weight . How awesome is that ? :)

I had really bad last supper syndromebut my surgen had a "zero pound rule" that if i gained even one pound from the time i had my pre op test to the date of my surgery that he would not preform my surgery. So i ate my favorite food in very small amounts i had my eyes on the prize and i knew he was serious so i didnt binge too much.

Good luck with surgery!!!!!!!! You going to look fab!!!!

It's dawned on me how important these boards will be to me as I go through this journey... thanks to everyone for their suggestions and comments - it helps so much just to know that I'm not alone. I've decided not to tell anyone about the surgery - just my husband knows. He's so nervous for me, but so supportive, so I am lucky. Thanks to everyone's comments, I am doing much better today, just feeling more in control and not so anxious to spend the day eating cake...LOL. 13 days to go... I simply can not wait. ;-)

p.s. anyone from the Wisconsin / Northern Illinois area??

I've amazed myself (dont have a surgery date yet but it is likely to be late November, early December) that I havent felt this way. Because before I went to the surgeon I was stuffing my face every day - I've got a BMI of 35 and I wanted to be sure I'd qualify. I think that's cured me for the short term, I managed to lose 6kg then gain 2kg to just sqeak in. Now I've got a much more moderate appetite because I've had my fill of crap food for the time being.

I'm working on changing habits from now till surgery - better food choices, less snacking, no binging. I'm eating enough to feel full and satisfied (and not lose weight) but eating well, I want to be as healthy as possible by surgery date.

Dont you want to kill me? hehe. I do have these periods where I think "this is so easy why on earth do I have a weight problem" but they never last.

But I have convinced myself that I will enjoy food MORE afterwards when it has less of a hold on me. So I'm not viewing this as an end but as a beginning.

I guess you said it all right there...

It is a struggle for everyone, each in his or her own way. I have been following weight watchers for 3+ years and have maintained the 50+ pounds I lost, and am fanatical about eating healthfully. My issue is that I have not reached my goal, and no amount of salads (much information here on that subject!!) may ever get me there. I want to be successful, and this is a life-long battle I intend to win.

So thanks for your thoughts, and the very best of luck to you on your journey.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
