Vegetable Protein (Morningstar, etc)

Recommended Posts

Has anyone's doc or nutritionist ok'd these products? I am on mostly soft food and can eat chicken and fish too. I'm just getting a little tired of them all the time and found some Morningstar black bean burgers in my freezer. One has 11g of Protein. I'm going to predict they are probably ok b/c I'm sure there are some vegetarian banders out there ..but wanted to get thoughts.

My first experience with a black bean burger was my first trip to a restaurant post op. I was looking for something safe to eat at Chili's and ordered that. OMG it was so dry it got stuck almost immediately! I thought I was going to die (almost). I finally violated the no drinking rule and drank a few sips of Water and it finally went down. Since then I have bought some Boca burgers and I think Morningstar and I found them difficult to get down. They are not very moist and dry stuff doesn't go down well, at least for me. I would check with your dietician before trying them. If you are still on soft foods I am not sure that is the way to go.

i had the spicy black bean burger this am for Breakfast.< /p>

i have tried just about all the morningstar products & haven't cared much for any of them, other than the black bean burger.

i love it w/a little pico, very tasty & more importantaly - keeps me full for hrs. just realized i hadn't eaten lunch yet - it kept me that satisfied.

Unless labeled otherwise, the Morningstar stuff is all soy Protein so remember that soy doesn't usually mix so well with thyroid issues. I have a friend who did NutriSystem a few years ago and a lot of the protein (at least then) was soy stuff. Her thyroid levels , for which she was taking medication, go seriously out of whack and the doctor was trying to figure it out. It finally came up that she was losing weight with NutriSystem and he told her she cuoldn't eat it anymore unless there was no soy protein in it. My daughter has IBS and she was told no soy protein either. So, if you don't fall into those categories, try to cook it with some moisture added because any vegetable protein (soy or otherwise) is usually pretty darned dry and we've pretty much all struggled with dry stuff!

I haven't been banded, yet. However I am a vegetarian and asked my doc about post-op issues. They just told me to stay away from string stuff like pineapple chunks, asparagus(sp), ect. I eat veggie burgers. My hubs is not a vegetarian and not too fond of veggie burgers. However, if I put a sunnyside egg on it, he loves it. The runny yolk might help it go down better. Just a thought. Good luck!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
