Insurance in Mexico

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if you have to have special auto insurance for Mexico? DBF believes that you have to have insurance issued by mexican company -- I said it's only 3 miles across the border -- and he said 3 or 30, if we have an accident, we won't be covered ... he wanted me to see if anyone knew anything about the matter.

THANKS!

There is special insurance, but I believe you can purchase it here before you go from your regular insurance company. Plus, I'm pretty sure it's optional.

At least that's the way it worked when I lived in San Diego.< /p>

I'm a licensed insurance agent, and an agent for the 2nd largest insurance company in America. MOST companies (check your policy jacket exclusions) cover you for the first 75 miles into Mexico. After that, you have to purchase another policy.

You have to check with your auto insurance but some cover you for a few miles into MX.

You MUST have ins to drive in MX, your ins or MX insurance. If you get in an auto accident you will show your ins and if you have none you will go to jail until the damages are paid. (Something we should probably do here in the US!)

The easier way to do it is what I'm starting to do. I park in the long term parking lot ($3-$5 a day, I forget) and have Ernesto pick you up there.

Do you have to have special insurance to ride with Ernesto to Dr. Aceves in Mexicali since we're not driving? I never even considered insurance because I'm not driving.

What kind of special insurance are you talking about? Some sort of passenger insurance? I'm not clear what you are asking.

I AGREE 100% - I think there are more people in Las Vegas without insurance than there is with -- or they have the bare minimum 15/30 which isn't a whole heck of a lot if it's a bad accident.

I believe that is exactly what we are going to do - just one less thing to worry about.

My DBF (now my darling fiance) was reading through some of the paperwork the other night and said "Honey, they will pick us up at the airport in Calixo" -- let's just do that ... so I believe that is what we're gonna do! Thanks for the suggestion!!!

I didn't know there was an airport in Calixico. I had to be picked up in San Diego.< /p>

Well, it is entirely possible he misread it -- I'll double check before we head out -- obviously -- as that will also make a difference in the route we take. I also found out I can get an insurance policy for $92 ... we have to figure out what we're doing - and probably soon since surgery is 1 month away -- woo hoo!!!!

I believe your BF is mistaken. Ernesto will pick you up at the SD airport, drive you through Calixico (the town after SD and before Mexacali), and take you just over the border to Mexacali.

I think that Renee said he would pick us up in Calexico also, I will have to call and check about that

WasA is the expert on this since she goes back and forth all the time. I am sure calling would give you the right answer quickly. I am anxious to hear the answer. Now you have me curious. I don't see why Ernesto would not be able to pick you up somewhere in Calixico, since he has to drive right through there from San Diego. That's where they cross the border.

I lived in California for many years and heard horror stories about driving in Mexico without actual Mexican insurance. They make their own rules down there and just because you have US insurance may or may not make a difference to them.

The best way is to have the driver pick you up.

Mexicali is a little different, it's not like it is TJ or Juarez. The police officers are paid a fair wage and they don't typically behave like TJ police officers.

If I was in trouble, lost, whatever... I'd walk up to a stranger for help in TJ before I would DREAM of approaching a police officer. In Mexicali it's a very different world. Half the police cars say, "Tourist Police" so you know they speak enough English to get by and their main focus is to be available if you need something. In Mexicali I would approach a police officer, not so in Tijuana.< /p>

If you want a real treat, check out Nogales Police officers. Now that's just some damned spooky stuff!

So is there an airport in Calixico and can Ernesto pick you up there or somewhere else in Calixico if it's more convenient for the patient?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
