Reflux? Maybe but I can't eat/drink much

Recommended Posts

I hope someone can help me. I'm not sure what's going on. The past few weeks i've had trouble with the band, either hungry or can't eat a thing. I went to the band dr. and she did an upper GI with a fill to see what's happening. She said the band looked good and was actually loose. so put some in.. i'm at about 2.5 on a 4 cc band. Anyway, stayed on liquids as instructed for two days then tried food but my body wasn't having any of that. I'm still on liquids and it's day 5. I thought my bad was too tight then i started feeling the sour stomach taste in my mouth and realized that's stomach acid. Now I think I have reflux and when she played with my band it triggered it worse. Has anyone had problems like this? I'm seeing a gastroenterologist on Monday so hopefully he can help. When I drink antacid it helps with some food but i'm still 90% liquids and sometimes throw up Water. Any advice would be helpful.

Thank you.

I wanted to speak to you from experiance. I was originally banded July 2007 with a 4 CC band. You might want to loosen your band some. Even .3 would be good. I personally am a "sweller" and could not ever get tighter than 2.1 CC's in my 4 CC band. Sudden onset of acid reflux has caused me bleeding esophagal ulcers over time while trying to find medication to control the reflux and acid problems, vomiting ensued and then band slippage. I also developed a hiatal hernia. I just had surgery to fix my band and hiatal hernia becasue my stomach slipped up through the band. That was last wednesday. Then the band was still too tight because of scar tissue and I could not get fluids down. So on Thursday with no improvement i had a second (or third counting every lap nad surgery I've ever had) surgery last Thursday and replaced my 4 CC band with a 10 CC band. I am 153 LBS or less now. That was a rough road. I just wanted you to know how at times things evolve... If your acid reflux goes away after a slight unfill then you were too tight. I hope everything goes well for you. I rarely post on here, but if I can help anyone not go down the same gradual path I did, I want to.

I am having the same problem after losing 90lbs since feb.22, 2009 surg. date. I can't keep anything down and it has been almost (3) months since last fill. I throw up with even just Water sometimes and I can't keep anything down. Body wants icecream badly and that I shouldn't have. ---I don't want to losen the band because I don't want to gain the wt. back... It hurts bad.

I'm actually suffering from reflux now as well. I went in today for a small unfill. I have the 4cc band and for the first 1.5 years it was a miracle - I loved it!! I was 7lbs from my goal weight. Then, reflux entered my life. Doc says it was originally caused by stress, but now that I've had it once it continues to come back every time I have a band adjustment. I was at 2.4cc as I was successfully losing the first 18 months and now I have .6. I am on a continuous cycle of getting unfills, waiting several months (during which time I gain weight), start going back for fills and working my way up slowly and eating properly. I hit my "sweet spot" and 8-10 weeks later reflux sets in again and the cycle starts over. My band is in tact and all looks great, but the reflux is limiting me. My doctor seems uninterested in my frustration so please, let us know what you find out. Good luck

Thank you for your posted comment. Is that what this is called reflux? Well, I am concerned because I don't want to miss a fill and I don't want to complain saying it's tight to the doctor because then he will slow down the fills and be more careful and then I wont lose more wt... I think that is why most only lose 50lbs or so it seems and the others that lose more are working out, eating right AND NOT MISSING ANY FILL... So I puke all the time and my hair is not falling out yet... Is this dangerous? Am I alone here... Sometimes I even go to a buffet and I go to the bathroom like five times --Round 1--Round 2--3,4 and 5. Somethings not right here.

Acid reflux, reflux for short. First of all I don't have to tell you that your days at the buffet are over. It's best to stay away from them; mostly because you shouldn't be eating nearly that much and it then becomes a waist of money. I also had to learn to pace myself when eating with "fast eaters". Take your time!!! After my surgery when all was good I would test my limits and believe me I found what I could and couldn't get away with - everyone is different, but we all want to be slim and buffets (banded or not) won't get us there. I became obsessed with losing and as I got closer and closer to my goal weight I knew I wasn't achieving success in a healthy way (the last 25lbs was lost because i was making myself sick). I started having acid reflux and pushed myself to the limit as you're doing. The more you throw up the more the acid reflux handicaps you. You'll become dehydrated and once that happens you'll scream to have the restriction removed so you can drink Water. Out of fear of gaining weight back, I've pushed myself to the point of dehydration and starvation. Yes, I have gained most of it back, but I won't push myself like that again. I'm starting over and trying to do it RIGHT this time, but am afraid I won't find success because I've already hurt my body. I urge you to tell the doctor and get it right now - the band is just a tool, not a miracle cure. A tool we have to use the right way or it won't work for us. And, yes, unfortunately, excersise MUST be part of my success this time around.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
