Difference in the type of lap band you get?

Recommended Posts

When I was at my pre-op aapointment, they mentioned that I will either get the Realize or Allergan (AP) band. They indicated that there really wasn't much of a difference but said I could choose the one that I wanted. I was wondering if anyone else had heard about the differences between the two bands and had a preference for one over the other?

I looked it up once but I honestly can't remember the difference. The Realize holds more cc's, I'm sure about that... but the other one is more common. I think the way it is built is a little different?

My surgeon said he just does the regular one so I didn't read up on it much. Do a search in one of the main forums and I'm sure you'll find tons of info.

I'm curious as to what you find out and what you decide, tho so let us know. :rolleyes2:

I had the same questions... I plan on getting the Allergan AP band but don't know if I'll get the Realize. Here's a great site that compares the two. Really, they do the same thing and the differences are minimal.

Compare Adjustable Gastric Bands - LAP-BAND vs. REALIZE Band

It's a good question to ask your surgeon, BEFORE you go under! My friend thought she was getting the Allergan one, but came out with Realize.

My physician uses the Realize band because it is newer with improvements made in cc volume and flexibility he says. However, he said both work fine and he was okay if his patients preferred the other.

My surgeon uses both and compares the to Coke vs. Pepsi. I got to handle both devices ahead of time and honestly there is very little difference. The port on the Realize band is slightly lower profile so if you get really really skinny there is less of a chance of it sticking out. Some people say the Realize band has better online support but I have been on there using my Realize code and it's just ok.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
