Be Careful with the New Fill Procedure

I had my second fill yesterday and my Dr. advised me of a new procedure. No lidacane- that was no biggie, just a little pinch. The biggie is after they drain all of the fulid out, discard it, then refill it with fresh Fluid, this is what happens.

You sit up, the Dr. has you drink Water while he fills your band until the water no longer goes down. then he starts to remove it until you can swallow again. I got less fluid in now that when I went in. I had 3.5cc and I only wanted .5cc. I do pretty well. 1st fill after surgery was 10/17/08. Surgery date was 6/18/08.

As of today I can barely drink a slimfast shake. I have to take small sips and it is hard to get water down. That traumatized my stomach. It felt like something was stuck in my throat all night and still today. He say's this is a better way to get a more accurate fill but it was painful. I could feel the band tighten up immediately and to have the water stop in my esoughogus (not sure on spelling) not good.

In the future: I am ok wihout lidacane and the removal of the fluid and repalcing with the fresh- but I will only get .5cc more than I had previously in without the sitting up and swallowing water. That was a horrible expereince.:)

I don't understand why they would have to remove the fill already in there. When you do that, you irritate the stomach. It is very sensitive. When you have your fill in, you are somewhat tight, then they remove it all and then refill you too tight then take out until you can swallow, it doesn't sound good to me.

I have a friend that the doctor did that way, her esophagus went into spasm, she totally shut off, ended up in ICU for 3 days and nearly lost her band. She sued the doctor and he paid all of her medical expenses since she had no insurance.

I think I will take my fills a bit at a time thank you.

Robin

It is Saturday, 6 days after my fill. I cannot sit and eat, I have to stand. MY STOMACH IS STILL VERY SENSITIVE. I will most certainly take my fills in increments and not this way again.

I understand what you are going through. I had my first fill three weeks ago and for the first two weeks, everything (and I mean everything) got stuck. Liquids went down like a lump in my throat. I threw up several times. I was miserable. To top it off, I wasn't losing any weight. I was really questioning my judgement in getting the lap band. I decided to stick it out and wait for my next appointment on March 12th. Well, miraculously, the band gradually loosened. Now I am tight but I can usually get down most things. I still get stuck a few times a week but it is not nearly as painful as before. The weight is now starting to come off again. Weird.

Maybe you need some time like me...but if you have to stand to eat, you may be even tighter than I was.

Why have you not gone back for a slight unfill?
