What was YOUR most desperate, CRAZY WL scheme?

Recommended Posts

To quote the most darling DeLarla...

"... tons of us already tried Nutrisystem and many other expensive and useless diets. Save your money and be patient. Just my opinion."

That got me thinking of all the things I have tried over the years. I was wondering if anyone can beat me for crazy weight loss schemes?

Here are my 2 most over-the-top:

1) Having my jaws wired for 2 months. (Actually, they just wire your teeth shut. Worked pretty well, only I started to go crazy not being able to brush my teeth... oh, and the "mumbling" got to be a bit much!)

2) Going to the Shick Center (now defunct). Oh my...I paid a fortune for the whole treatment, but couldn't take the torture after 3 weeks. And I DO mean torture. They "desensitize" you to your "problem" foods. Here's what they did to get me over french fries... After having me take a handfull and SQUEEEEZE the grease out of them they sat me in front of a full-length mirror, hooked me to electrodes and had me watch myself while I stuffed handfulls of fries in my mouth chewing WHILE being SHOCKED, having fish emulsion sprayed in my face and being yelled at by the "counselor."

Okay--let's see if anyone can top that for self-abuse?

(BTW it was years before I could enjoy a fry again.)

Oh, my, Kare. That's got to be the top. Opti-fast and hypnosis were the only "weird" things I tried. What I can't understand is why we ever though Opti-fast would work long-term. Hypnosis was hopeless from the start.

I can't beat that Kare. I have been on soooo many fad diets that didn't work. One time I went on one where the first day you only eat hot dogs, 1 for Breakfast 2 for lunch and then 3 for dinner. same on 2nd day but you eat hard boiled eggs, 3rd day you eat only bananas. I remember that I did lose weight but It came back ++++. God I hate diets!!

LOVE MY BAND BUDDY!!!!

OMG! I've never done anything like that. I've just done Weight Watchers a gazillion times.

I actually have lost a lot of weight once, about 15kg which was my surplus at the time. It took about a year to lose it, I just decided I wasnt going to diet anymore and that I was just going to eat sensibly. It worked, although it was slow. I was pretty active back in those days walking to work and the like. I kept that weight off and maintained about 145lb at 5ft 10 for a good 6 years till I started having babies. I even maintained it aftr my first baby but my second pregnancy I gained a heap of weight and never lost it and I found the lifetstyle change with 2 babies in 2 years was enough to gradually start the gaining.

Electrical shock treatment. But I won't go into details since there's already a thread like this started where I poured my guts out.

A diet where you eat only hot dogs! Oh man, I almost choked on a blueberry when I read that!

You know what's the craziest thing about when I went to Shick? At the time I was in my twenties in college and a whopping 145 pounds! Yes, my disgustingly fat body to myself at 23 is my fantasy goal weight now! I really looked fine--I just didn't look great in a bikini. Thank God I have no desire to wear a bikini these days!

I definitely can't be that one, Kare. How awful :/

While I've done about every fad diet you can imagine, the stupidest wl scheme for me was being bulimic for a few years. Like you, I was actually quite a good size back then, just couldn't see it when I looked in the mirror. I'm so glad that whole part of my life is now over...

Hi ,

I must admit I can't top the shick center Kara, but close, I was on a diet where they inject you with pregnant womens urine everyday in addition to a 600 calorie diet, I lost weight fast but felt so weak after a month I had to stop.

Icapec Syrup after meals. Not proud of it, but did it all through high school. Eventually I didn't even have to take it but just smell it. To this day, it will make me gag with the smell.

Kare isn't a real person. She's my alter ego. I just made up her screen name. KARE, you are the only person in the whole world that I've run into so far that remembers the Schick Center. Sure, they remember the Schick Smoking Centers, but you and I must have been the only two victims in the food department.

No matter how bad it sounds what Kare went through, it was 100 times worse. Kare, did you get a variety of counselors during your treatments? Some were kind, but I had this one big fat German woman named Hilda or Comrad or something who was just awful. She had me crying my eyes out, so I ran out of the room, puked, then got in my car and nearly crashed through heaving sobs and tears. Then some dude at a bus stop was opening up a Snicker's Bar and I puked on the side of the road. When I walked in the house I nearly fainted. It was really, really awful.

Fish emulsion. You just can't truly appreciate the beauty of fish emulsion unless you've been there. Oh, it was just awful.

Yup....me too. Only for me it was more like ten years. It was pretty bad, there were times I was so weak and my heart was beating so fast that I was sure I'd die in my bed overnight. It also eventually caused rampant paranoia and agoraphobia. My glands under my neck were swollen. The insides of my mouth were raw. It was pretty goddamn stupid in retrospect but it made so much sense then.

Then again....probably the most outrageous thing I've ever done in order to lose weight is to allow a surgeon to cut into a perfectly healthy body in order to attach a strip of silicone around my stomach. I mean, when you stop and think about it...it's pretty crazy. Thank God I appreciate crazy.

Does anyone remember the Cambridge diet? I blended my brains out & actually lost weight (never been that thin since--123 lbs- I still remember it 25 years later. I tried bulemia too, never really worked.

Other then the perscription appetite suppressant and Water pills, the only really weird diets I have done are

1) Duke university Rice diet, I still have rice issues. You get 3 cups of rice per day for 2 weeks, then you can have 3 cups of rice and 1 serving of fruit, 1 serving of veggies, 1 serving of chicken or fish, all steamed no butter or salt. I did this in my teens with my mom.

2) cabbage Soup diet, nothing more to say on that one.

3) Atkins, it worked for the 11 months I was on it, I lost 87 pounds, then I found out i was pregnant and I gained it all back and then some. The obgyn said that since my body was "accustomed" to having the extra weight for so long, I would gain more weight it was just a fact of life. I was showing when I was only 12 weeks pregnant. I couldn't touch my fingers together around my belly by 7 months. I was GINORMOUS!!! From month 5 until I gave birth all I heard was Is it twins? and when I told strangers that I had x amount of weeks to go they always asked ""Are you sure????" I lost some of the weight but I have my band to help me battle the rest. Thank God!!!~Mandy

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
