Calling All MARCH '09 Bandsters - We need a name!

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I was just banded on Monday and I feel great, no hunger at all I'm very surprised at that. I got up and started walking around as soon as I could and I keep walking as much as possible. I really don't have port pain just gas pain. Iam able to drink Water just like I used to, I need to keep reminding myself to sip. I don't get pain from drinking though.

So far Im very happy with the results and how I feel.

Bernadette

Congrats Bernadette!! I'm so happy you feel great. I had no hunger either, actually I was afraid to eat at first. I couldn't drink water like it sounds that you can until about day 7. I'm 10 days out now and feel so much better than I did that first week. I think I pushed myself a little too hard (I flew cross country home, went to work on day 3, and flew back cross country the following saturday on day 5). I feel much more normal - feel like I could eat anything - and am not really feeling uncomfortable when I am full. I am stopping myself but it is more and more difficult. For example today, I felt hungry around 2pm after having Wendy's chili for lunch.< /p>

Again, best of luck to you!!

What is everyone eating in a day right now?

breakfast: coffee with cream/splenda

11am: Protein 30g shake 11oz

12:30: Large Wendy's chili

5pm: creamy potato Soup - about 2 cups

And I drank 1 16oz bottled water today so far.

Not hungry now, but could eat....but won't!

I can't believe you are already able to eat chili too. I am still on clear liquid until the 22nd then I can have pureed foods. So if I wanted that chili I'd have to put it in the blender. I am going to make some Soups this weekend and puree them so I have lunches. I am also still not that hungry. I get hunger pains kind of at night but I can't tell sometimes whether it's gas or actual hunger. Does anyone know how to tell?

I am a little scared because I've been tracking my calories and I'm only intaking about 250 minimum and 350 max per day. I know that is sooooo little which is why I'm losing like no tomorrow but is that really how it's supposed to be? I even ate about 1/4 cup of full fat pudding today just to up my caloric intake. Should I be worried? I'm getting all my Protein in with bullets and shakes so I'm good there.

Good! I'm so glad. I needed somewhere we could all talk where all of us were going through the same things.

I am glad someone else has got nervous and thought about canceling. I am on day six of preop and 10 days before banding and my brain is starting to spin. Thanks for the honesty.

Hi team. I'm 10 days out and saw my surgeon today because I'm still leaking from my port incision. He says it doesn't look infected, and it's probably from the blood thinners I'm on for heart issues.

However, I told him I was starting to feel hungry, and he gave me permission to carefully start mushies. YAY! I had some soft scrambled eggs and a little bit of mashed potatoes - so yummy.

I keep seeing people saying they are using bullets...What are bullets? I am 2 days post-op and feeling pretty good besides the gas but walking is definately helping. The only problem I am having is back and neck pain from trying to sleep in a reclining position. We don't have a recliner so I just prop myself on pillows. Does anyone know if there is any other way to sleep during this healing process?

I have also been wearing a compression cami...it's one of those girdle cami's and it makes me feel more stable when I'm up and around.

Yes I ate chili from Wendy's and had absolutely not problems. I am forcing myself back to only liquids - b/c I know I'm supposed to be on full liquids for 3 weeks after surgery and I want to do things the right way. I was so weak and faint and hungry I just needed the substance. I AM hungry - its amazing how different we all are. I felt that my body needed it and I listened. I wish I wasn't hungry. I'm battling not eating and sticking to Soups and liquids, its not easy, but I'm going to make it happen.

Today I've eaten: 1 graham cracker with cream cheese, starbucks coffee (I added 2T Genisoy protien powder), Amy's organic Tomato bisque Soup, 1 cup milk (for more protein) and my liquid Centrum Vitamins. Its 3:15pm, and I feel good. Going to try to get some more Water in.

These are the Protein bullets that people talk about:

NEW whey Liquid Protein 42g (fruit punch) Made By IDS for Only $28.95

If there's a Target close to you I suggest getting a Husband Pillow. I bought one and I've been using it since my surgery on wednesday and it helps a great deal.

Where did you get your compression cami?

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
