Something Gross

Recommended Posts

Am I the only one? Sometimes I want to eat something that I know I should not eat for it may get stuck or it has just too much fat, carbs or caloires. So giving into temptation I will chew it up and then spit it out.

I think you have to be careful with this. I've had advice before on this board about making myself purge because it is similar to bulimia. Well let me tell you anorexics do the "chew and spit" routine. Its not going to damage the band obviously and is much better than what i have done at times. But it is an eating disordered behavious which you need to try and overcome .

I know when I was still on the puree stage that I would have a bit of hubbys steak or something, chew it up and get the flavour out then spit it. I couldnt help myself.

Also wanted to add that I dont do that now because if there is something I really want, I usually have it or Ill think about it for days until I have it and usually go totally overboard on it, so I find having a little bit when I first feel like it works better than trying not to give into it.

You are still getting a lot of the fat and calories when you chew the heck out of something.

I will do this with meat sometime. I will pop it into my mouth and then start chewing. If I discover that the meat is just not gonna go down, ie dry, grisly, stringy, I chew the heck out of it to get the flavor, but then I discretely spit it out into my napkin as per Emily Post. I just don't want to get something stuck. and Meat will get stuck on me.

Yep! I confess... Ive done this too :(.

most of the time its with high carb things, like chips, Cookies and so forth.

The chewing and the taste are all I wanted, no need to let it do down.

I have to admit I have done it and the same as Vines says with meat if I am chewing and I know it is not going to go down why bother I will spit it out. Usually it's the taste I want. Or if I am eating and I get that golf ball feeling that I am full and I cannot afford to PB with the mouthful I have I will spit it out.

I've done the same thing with the meats that I'm chewing that I just know aren't going to sit well... but I can't say that I've done it 'on purpose' but I can see how it might help temptation.

Unfortunately, I usually crave things like Ice Cream and things like that wouldn't do so well to 'chew up' and spit out :(

When I was newly banded and cooking for my kids, I'd catch myself putting food in my mouth then realizing what am I doing and spit it out...I didn't realize how much food I ate while cooking.

I am guilty of trying stuff and spitting it out, just cause I want to taste it.

very wrong and I should be slapped up side the head.

my surgeon, and nutritionist both say this is fairly normal and a good way to avoid actually eating that piece of steak or whatever else it is you want. It calms your mind, making this process easier on you. The SMALL amount of calories or fat is not going to make any difference..

to answer you question .. no before I was able to actually eat anything I want this was my only way to get any satisfaction for the stuff I know I couldnt eat (steak for example)

Hello

I was banded on 7/29/05 doing well. I also find myself putting things in my mouth and then spitting them out. I see that there is a few of you that have have a reband what does that mean and why? if you do not mind answering me.

I am not banded yet..so I have been trying to follow the rules such as chewing my food very very well, not drinking with meals and so on.. The only two meats that I really care to eat are chicken and baked pork chops. But my habit and evil food are hot cheetos. I try and try and have been trying to stay away from them since I am wanting to get banded. I have done pretty good. (I try not to keep any in the house) But kudos to all of those that are doing so well. I am so happy that when I will need support that I can come here.

I did it when I was on full liquids for 6 weeks. The first thing I did it with was popcorn at the movies. I also did it with the nice french bread that I got every time I ordered Soup out. I would tell them not to give me the bread but they always did anyway!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
