Hello,

I am just starting on this exciting journey, scheduled my first informational seminar on Dec 10th and then I'll begin the 6 month requirements requested by my insurance company. I was curious as to what tests you need to have done before surgery, is it standard things? I had my gall bladder out in 2005 and had to have an EKG and chest X-ray before my surgery, also I know they do blood work. Just preparing for what is to come.

Thanks everyone.

Regarding the blood work, it is extensive, but I'm already seeing the benefit. I had a physical with my family doctor complaining of fatique, he did extensive blood work that showed nothing alarming. He did 80% of what bariatric program wanted. The additional tes showed a very low Vitamin D despite my one-a-day 400% RDR. Since taking the D supplement, I'm feeling better.

As you can see from my signature these are the thigns I had to do with AETNA health Insurance:lol:. In addition i had to do 6 mo's of a diet. I was up and down and all over but I did make changes. Doing Bloodwork on money and meeting with the surgical nurses at the Hospital.

My surgery date is Dec 4th. I was lucky and didn't have to do much preop testing. Listed below for ya

Psy Eval

Blood work

EKG

Excercise Consult

Nutrional Consult

Everything came back good except for my liver function. Dr said it was elevated just a little bit. The dr wanted me to start my preop diet early and be on it for 5 weeks vs the 2 she normally puts her patients on.

Best of luck to you!

As you can see, it varies by doctor, insurance, AND patient. I had to have:

blood work

psych eval

upper GI

ecg

chest x-ray

abdominal ultrasound

I could have needed, but didn't:

test for sleep apnea

cardiac clearance....using whatever tests cardiac doc wanted (stress tests etc)

Some docs even require a current pap smear/mammo for eligible females.

The urinalysis, the day of surgery, was to make sure I wasn't pregnant.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
