My surgery date is October 29th!! Others?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I am glad I found this site. I have a date of 10/29 for surgery and I have been doing the lousy liquid diet since 10/15. Not easy is it? I weighed in at a whopping 275 lbs. on Wednesday and am 5'2". I have a long road ahead of me and am glad I found others to talk to. Please tell me this will work for anyone who is post op a few months or more. Are you satisfied when you eat? Have you had good success so far? :tongue_smilie:-Mona

Welcome Mona! I'm taller than you by 3 inches but I way outweighed you! (still do!) I'm only 7 weeks postop but doing well. My first fill didn't give me any restriction yet but then I didn't expect it to, either, so it's all good. I'm working on eating like a bandster....No Snacks (all surgeons are different but mine is adamant about it) no drinking 15 min before, during, after meals, chewing well, paying attention, stopping when I'm satisfied, etc. It's going pretty good. I have been happy to get the band and never had a blue moment or any doubts...(a brief bout of horror when I came to in recovery the 1st time and didn't have the band but that's all my fault for not following my doc's preop diet, and it's long past me now!) I hope you love yours too!

Hello. My surgery date is October 27, 2008. I am baffled about the "diet" before surgery. All I was told was to eat like the Atkins diet of high Protein and low carbs now till surgery. I didnt even really start that because figured I would eat normal a few more days before the rest of my life of change. Now I am worried since reading your question that the op could be canceled if I dont eat correctly BEFORE the op. I have NO IDEA what you both are talking about in the liquid diet prior to op, please explain! thank you

Call your surgeon's office on Monday and find out exactly what s/he wants you to do! EVERYONE is different. If he told you to do Atkins, then do it. Don't wait; they have a reason for putting us on diets and it isn't torture (LOL); your surgeon can tell you if it's ok if you delayed. Don't panic or go by what happened to someone else, except as a "warning" to do what YOUR doc tells you!

Same w/liquids preop. I was given a special diet for the last day and 1/2 prior to surgery; many people are. That happened at the hospital when I was doing my preop testing. Most want you essentially empty (stomach and intestines and bowels) before surgery. Again, do what your doc tells you!

If you're unsure call them and ask! That's why you pay them the big bucks! :tongue_smilie:

Michelle - I have a copy of the liver shrink diet I was given by my surgeon and nutritionist to follow two weeks prior to surgery. It is on my blog thingy on here so feel free to look at it if you want. RM is right, find out what your doctor's requirements are. Good luck.

My surgery is also scheduled for 10/29. I have been on the liquid diet since 10/16. It sucks but I know I have to do it. I think about food all day long and even dream about it! I know it will all be worth it when I don't have any delays in my surgery due to not being compliant. My surgeon said he can tell right off if you cheat. I want him to know how commited I am.

I know, and am glad someone else is having a grat time with that liquid diet. Two weeks is a long time, but my surgeon says it is to shrink your liver to make surgery safer. I am having a hard time sleeping also. Takes me forever to get to sleep even if I take something. Anyone having trouble with naps or falling asleep? At 5'2" and now 271 (dropped some pounds over the last few days on the liquid diet), I cannot wait to get the band, but I am nervous. I desperately want to be a normal weight...not skinny, but maybe a size 10. That is a lot different than the 26/28 I am now. I carry my fat around my middle too...makes it hard to breathe when trying to walk. I hope to get past that relatively quickly. -Mona ;-)

I'm an oct 29 bandster-to-be! I'm also 5'2" wieghing in at 172. Dr. Ortiz does not require me to go on a pre-op diet, but I am going to start all liquid protiens 7 days prior to my surgery to get a kick-start on my progress and get used to eating in a totally different way! I'm just worried that being banded is going to be like all the other diets I have been on my entire life - great for the first 10-20 lbs, and then back to the same old habits... Guess it's up to me right!? Good luck everyone - will be checking in to see how the 29ers are doing!

Well, I made it thru the first weekend of liquid diet. It wasn't that bad. We even went to a restaurant, I just drank my slim fast and fed my grandson. I didn't even sneak a single bite of anything. I guess I'm stronger that I thought I was.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
