Think Oprah has given up?

Recommended Posts

Personally, I feel sorry for Oprah. How closed minded can someone be

that refuses to even consider WLS. She is basically saying she would rather be fat than even take it into consideration. I think that's sad.

I can't wait to see how Starr Jones does a few years from now. Even having WLS does not mean that you can keep it off. Like we all say, it's just a tool. But why not use that tool if you can afford it? Oprah can certainly afford it, but she is being narrow minded.

I agree, Oprah is sad. I wonder if it is a pride thing that she refuses? :tongue2:

I don't have a clue. She has certainly proved it to herself and everyone else, that she can't do it on her own. She now claims to have thyroid problems.

She's surrouned by enablers. Even that Dr. that comes on her show has drunk the O kool-aid. She's at a point none of the piglets suckling on the teat is willing to risk her ire by telling her the truth. Cosby needs to give her another call.

I've watched Oprah ever since she was a newscaster in Baltimore a long time ago when I was still down in MD. I know from her previous shows she's deathly afraid of surgery/needles for one thing. I don't know if any of you saw the show where she finally let them pierce her ears. I know from my own personal experience so far, now that I am debanded, that it's not a miracle cure and Oprah knows her limitations and she also knows she loves food. WLS does not work for those of us who are in that situation, me minus the fame and money, and also can learn to be comfortable in one's own body and be happy even if we're not thin. Especially if you get to a certain age certain things are not as important. She's concerned about her health and I don't see why everyone here expects her to be a WLS spokes person and even expect her to get the surgery. Do you expect her to be a McCain supporter? I respect her and I don't even watch her show anymore, Nanook.:Dancing_biggrin:

I don't think anyone expects her to get WLS, it's just that she's spoken out against it and she herself clearly doesn't have the answers. She's not OK with being overweight and she's triedeverything else she can think of and yet she won't do the one thing that has helped more overweight people than all of her other attempts combined.

WLS may not work for everyone but it does work for many and it certainly works better than the fad diets Oprah has tried over the years.

But like I said she's deathly afraid of surgery and needles. With all her money don't you think she would have someone basically suck it out of her if she could. She could have major work done but she doesn't and I don't think promoting something that someday may end up being another "fad" of sorts is wise either especially if someone's life could be a risk from comps and surgery. JMHO Nancy:smile:

I'm confused, in this last line are you saying as people get older their health or their looks matter to them less??

Yes, we prefer not to look in the mirror. No jk. Actually I believe that some people as they age gain a new awareness of what's really important in life. Some people are lucky and are aware of this at an earlier age. We've all been told that we are not worthy unless we're thin. Thin equals success, happiness, love, you name it and that can be a somewhat superficial way of living life. But it is a life choice. But it is a choice. It takes time to get from a point where you step on a scale and read a number and if it's not in the "happy thin range" it will ruin your whole day! I'm not saying health is not important but I don't think there is denying the fact that we're all here not always just for our health but for esthetic reasons. I choose not to chase that dragon anymore as it is way overrated, just in my honest opinion. I am a thinker outside of the box and it has taken me a while to get here, Nancy:smile:

Nancy, I'm genuinely happy for you that you are self-aware enough to be happy in accepting yourself as you are.

I struggle with accepting myself as I am (not just physically) vs. the other side which says I should continuously strive to be the best me that I can be. These are philosophies which are not necessarily contradictory but in the modern world is very difficult to balance.

To each their own. But I don't consider myself (or my wonderful 59 year old Mum who always looks STUNNING) stuck "in a box" because I/we take pride in our external appearances as well as trying to be the best, generous, caring human beings we can. Yes, there are more important things in life that a polished exterior, but if I'm shallow because I want to feel good on the inside and out, then I'll wear that badge.

Donna you're right but there is room out there for larger size people to feel good about themselves. We tend to be our own worse critics at times and with any other groups that are discriminated against that would be pretty rare. I know it's not a politically acceptable philosophy to say it's OK to be fat or to compare discriminations between different groups example Gays and Fat people. But fat people are the last group that it's still acceptable to criticize and discriminate against and openly mock and joke about. I think it's also a choice we make to make judgments against them/us and it's something that we can change.

I also believe years of yo yo dieting have contributed to the "obesity epidemic" that is often a major concern in our health systems. I know it's a very tough way to live one's life and our society makes it more difficult to be happy as we are. I myself have dieted for years and it wasn't until I stopped that weight began to come off naturally, weird huh? Anyway I struggled with this for many years but I just want to leave a little blip out there in the world of lapbandia that there are other ways of looking at things and ourselves but I'm not here to condemn anyone or judge really as I've have been there too and now the pressures we're all under especially as women and I know most people think I'm a joke of sorts but I very sincere about this, Nancy:smile:.

Yeah, some of us old folk do .... so we go out and get WLS.

Even if it is apparently a "fad". :Dancing_biggrin:

Shesmiles, that's fine and I'm glad you're happy and your mum and you should be. I just think there are those that really struggle internally about their image/self esteem because of their size and may have never even thought that it's OK to be just as they are physically. Many of us lose weight only to gain it back again and the more times we diet the more we tend to pack on even more pound. Have any of you been in a situation like that and then you look back at earlier pictures before all the dieting when you thought you were so fat and ugly to say OMG, I really looked good then if only I had stayed that way! But low and behold you decided to "diet".

The lap band is a tool for some and has been useful and so have other WLS procedures but sometimes even those fail as with diets and how many times are people going to get revisions to new surgeries. I've seen cases where people were going on their third revision and I find that to be extreme. Like I said I'm tired of chasing that dragon and if there's someone out there that thinks it's ok to be as they are I don't think that's wrong but I know I have my critics, Nancy:smile:.

I think it's pretty important to be healthy. Fat isn't healthy. Most people who get WLS aren't just getting surgery so they can look better and fit into society's ideal of thin. They are getting surgery because they have major medical problems that are directly related to being overweight. For myself and everybody I know who has had WLS, this was a last resort. If Oprah doesn't want to have WLS, fine. But I don't think she should bash it either. WLS has saved a lot of lives and it definitely has its place. It isn't a fad, it has been around for decades now and will continue to be.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
