Vancouver Area Bandsters

As I said neither yay or nay. However, a number have posted that Wednesday is not convenient. Anytime would be convenient for me as I do not work.

Meeting at restaurants is risky because of reservations, no shows, costs etc. The Richmond group that met at a pizza place no longer meets.

I would continue to vote on the hospital.

Hello Dodie63 and Canadagirl33,

Thank you both for your well-wishes for today. I could not ask for better results, so I am very pleased. Iexpect that day two and three may be worse than today due to the pain meds I was given, but I am feeling really great! Or maybe it was due to all of your well-wishes :-)

I totally understand that it is hard to please everyone, so you don't need to make any changes on my behalf. If you are considering a poll, I can make it any evening EXCEPT Tuesdays and Wednesday. If daytime is better, I can make it then too, but I understand that most folks work 9-5.

Thanks again for all of your support thus far. You are both very inspirational!

Cindy (mamaj)

hi all,

haven't been here for a long time... it's been a tough year, family deaths, medication changes that made me put on over 20lbs, financial probs, and a car accident. i'm recovered enough physically to be ready to go back to the gym, and I realize that part of that means re-examining my eating in relation to the band. Before all this, I was a super slow loser, but I want to to find a way to make the band work for me. i figure coming here is a good start!

I haven't been here forever either, just like you Babe. I was banded exactly 3 years ago and struggled. Lost 50 pounds right after the band. Now I am back losing weight, and am very happy. I started using this website called www.fitday.com where you enter all the calories you eat, etc. it is fantastic and in the last month I have lost 12.5 pounds without feeling deprived at all. I do believe that the band helps with this and it is really good. I have been on a plateau for so long, but now I am very happy that the weight comes off easy like this, about 2 pounds average a week which is the most healthy way.

The band does help as I think without it I would be very hungry. I wanted to come to meetings again and hopefully I will make it one of these days but this is a busy time of year but I will try.

Cheers,

Gerdi

Hi Gerdi, nice to see a familiar name!

I've been using fitday since my surgery - admittedly, i've been rather lax the last few months... trying to get back into the habit again. I went to see Dr. Arseneau last week, and he thinks my car accident might have affected the band. For the past few week my band has been super tight, to the point where i can hardly drink Water in the morning, to really loose where i can easily eat 2 or 3 cups of Pasta without thinking. I've got to go in for a barium swallow to check it out. He says I'll probably need to go on liquids for a couple weeks and get a complete unfill to let the band rest.

I'm so happy for you that fitday has helped you so much, way to go!!! I'm going to try and make it to this month's meeting too... time permitting : )

no harm in taking a poll. I am not in a position to yay or nay, as I live just up the hill from Lions Gate.

Good luck.

Thursdays are even better for me! Dena

Way back in July last year I poked my head out on this board to say that I was thinking about lap band surgery. Nine months later I'm back. Since then I've forged ahead, and right now I'm on a four-week pre-op diet. I'm scheduled for surgery at the Maples Surgical Centre in Winnipeg on April 26, and then I'll get all my aftercare at False Creek.

So right now I'm in pre-op diet hell. The weekends are the toughest, but I'm hanging in there. My biggest challenges are weekends and when I'm on the road, and I've had a few successes in both areas, so I'm encouraged.

I'll poke my head back to see what's going on, and I was wondering what day the meeting at Lions Gate is now. I saw that there was some discussion about changing the date.

Bye for now, and have a good week, everyone!

Hi Everyone :)

Bumping this topic up to the top because this week is our monthly meeting in North Vancouver. Everyone is welcome to attend whether you have a band or are just beginning to look into it. Talking to those of us already banded can be a great source of info. Our meetings are informal and generally a lot of fun.

We will meet at Lion's Gate hospital on Wednesday evening, any time after 6.30, conference room C.

If anyone has questions or needs more info please email me at canadagirl33@hotmail.com

Hey Everyone,

It was great seeing so many people at last night's meeting! Anyways, as promised, here's the info at the Protein Powder I've been using:

Interactive Nutrition - Iso whey Protein (I get mine in Velvety vanilla, yummy and not gloopy, they have lots of flavours, but I haven't tried them)

1 Scoop has 130 Calories, O Fat, 1g Carbs, 31g Protein

I buy mine at a nutrition/supplement store on Davie St. right by the Fitness World between Howe and Granville. A small container is 20$ and the larger one is around 50$.

I usually have mine for breaky with frozen fruit, a scoop or two of benefiber and a bit of juice and Water all blended up.

Hope it helps you Barb (and hope you've managed to find us here!)

Yes, it was great having so much fun. I wish even more would come out. We may not have a formal meeting, but the face to face chat is so uplifting. I got some great advice about my coughing, etc. Have received word from my clinic to take a defill after the Easter break if I have not improved. The group helped me a lot.

I could not remember the name of my Protein Drink last night - LOL dementia at my age but I am using the same Protein drink. I use Vanilla as I am able to add whatever flavor I like. Buying a flavored protein mix limits me.

Hope to see Canadagirl at the next meeting.

Congratulations Babe on your uplifting story. Your journey is special and I know that you are now on the right track. Keep on truckin'

Hi Babe,

I just read here that you are loosing weight again, what did you do to get it going again as I am on a plateau right now.

Any ideas would be great. I have lost 22 pounds with fitday since November, but need to keep going.

So any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Gerdi

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
