OhGary,

You would be surprised at how much WW really does help in some ways. I have tried it twice and for some reason, I have problems with staying on diet plans. Had I stayed focused and kept going to the meetings I think I might have managed to stick with it. But, I feel like I need a constant reminder with having the lab band, because for one thing, I HATE to throw up, I'd rather get a beating than to throw up. Secondly, I have actually eaten too much before and had PBing without the band..So needless to say I really feel the lab band will be a good choice for me, because I feel I have a constant reminder NOT to overeat and make bad food choices. But, since you have never dieted, I would highly recommend Weight Watchers. There is A LOT of support there and when you see people who have lost 25 pounds, 50 pounds plus, it really helps when they hand out those little prizes. Try it out and see.

OhGary,

Good luck to you!!! I hope everything works out for you and remember....this is a wonderful board and it's always here for you no matter what your decision is. I know I have found it a tremendous help since finding it in July. I wish you the very best!!!

Have you tried swimming or Water aerobics? I have severe plantar faciitis and fibromyalgia and I can barely walk enough to get through my day, much less do any walking or running for exercise. I get in my pool every morning though and walk/jog as fast as I can for about half an hour and it doesn't hurt me one bit. My muscles feel the workout soreness but my foot is fine and I feel nothing in my joints. My heart rate gets up but I don't feel that breathless sweaty feeling that you can get with other aerobic exercise because the pool is cooling me off. I highly recommend it, if you don't have your own pool maybe you could look into a gym, or sometimes public schools have an athletic center where you can pay a small fee to use the pool, usually less than a gym membership.

I don't recommend jumping straight into a severely restricting diet when you've never dieted before, it works better to ease yourself into learning new habits. There's a book called Change One that uses this approach, you introduce one new healthier habit (like drinking more water or not eating after dinnertime) at a time and do it long enough for it to become second nature before adding another.

I wouldn't leap right into the band either without giving it your best effort first. Who knows, maybe all you need is to move more and control your portions

Ohgary, I don't think you are ready and the seminar will not give you enough info to make a truly informed decision. I recommend that in addition to the seminar, you also attend support group meetings (you can even if you are not banded) and "lurk" about on forums like this for a few weeks to even know what to ask your doctor and his staff. I went through my process very quickly (self-pay so did not have all the insurance requirements) and found out much more after the fact. In retrospect I don't regret getting banded, but it certainly has not been the miraculous obesity cure I thought it would be based on the "infomercials" and the billboards dotted along every major highway these days.

Well I went to the program tonight and I agree lap band is not for me. Gastric bypass would be what I would choose from the information delivered in the class tonight.

I will say that the class was good and gave me some good info, Enough to look at some no surgery options first. OSU has some non-bariatric programs but they are 50 miles away, I need something closer. Any way, I appreciate all the comments from folks.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
