When Should I Return to the Gym?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everybody!

My surgery was two days ago. When do you think I could return to the gym to walk on the treadmill? My husband wants me to go with him. I'd appreciate any advice on exercise.

You can go now if you'd like. I'd take it easy though. No stretchin of your stomach quite yet. Just try to walk on the tread mill for a while. i think i started working out after about a week but I am very young. So i healed very fast.

Make sure to walk only and don't do anything else. Be careful about bending/stretching, and don't go for too long where you wear yourself out. My doctor told me walking was fine, but no strenous activity or stomach work/weights until at least 30 days. You need time for your insides to heal - your stomach muscles. Trust me I have a friend who has a pulled muscle just from bending over too much 2 weeks after surgery and her pain is no joke.

I returned this afternoon. My hubby and I went to the 24 Hour Fitness in Downtown Houston. I did 30 minutes on the treadmill at 2.5 miles/hour. I felt great. This was the first time that I felt in control of my weight loss. Normally I would leave the gym feeling that I had accomplished something, but not really believing that it would have an impact. That's why I would always up the impact of my workout and tire and strain myself to death! This time, simply walking will be fine for me. I burned exactly 375 calories. Substantial, considering that all I had to eat today was a an egg and a 1/8 cup of gritts.:)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
