I think the more people u tell the more help and support u have. Other then people talking behind ur back that don't mean nothing. People going to talk anyway. Just look at it this way with out the surgery u be the same person just unhappy about the way in look.with the surgery u be fine person that u want everybody u want to see that is a good healthy person. And that what u doing it for is u that what all matter. I told everybody i don't care some wish they can do it to and they can. So don't be a shame about what u are doing girls.god bless everybody in their own way.

I have sopped the idea around with a few people but I haven't said anything in the last few months. I have confirmed my surgery with my dh, a good friend who has had wls, and the wonderful people on this forum.

Of course my DH knows and has been supportive. I've also told my family and a few friends and the people I work with. (I'm in a small office, nothings sacred lol) Other then that I am being selective rignt now of who I tell.

I have decided not to tell everyone. As of now, 2 friends know that I am having the surgery. I have tried so many diets and I always fail. This is such a personal decision I don't want to hear anything negative. I have about 65 lbs to lose and most people would say "just eat less and exercise more". Well, I do exercise and I do watch what I eat. If I didn't my weight would be triple of what it is today. There is a history of obesity in my family and I have witnessed all the problems that go hand-and-hand with being over weight. I do not want to live that life. I want to be healthy and live a long life.

I am SO greatful that I found this board and hearing about everyone's experience.

surgery date 9/5 (can't wait)

I have told tons of people! I sometimes have thought maybe I shouldn't have, but that is just me. I have had a lifetime of sharing information and the people it has helped me meet and help has been undeniable. You never know who you will help in your journey through life.

I have a disabled daughter who was born with a rare syndrome. After she was born a social worker gave me ideas of how to deal with people asking me questions about her (sometimes inappropriate ones) and not sharing any info so I could feel "normal". Well, guess what I tell everyone about her. She is a true blessing in my life and I am not ashamed of her at all. Her disability is part of who she is just like my weight is part of me. I am not embarrassed by either journeys. I may get frustrated with the difficulties I experience becasue of the challenges I face, but I am not ashamed to be having WLS. I am proud that I am brave enough to do what ever it takes to get healthy so I can live a long and happy life with all of my family.

I know I have already been helped tremendously by those of you on this site. I know we will be here for each other along the journey. For me, I feel like I should not limit that support and knowledge to this website alone. Sure there are people I would not tell, and there are people who are not supportive of my choice, but I am proud of what I am doing. If anyone thinks this is the "easy way" they are full of do-do!!! And they do not know what I have been through to get to this point. So, "pooh" on them and "yeah" for us!

Just my 2 cents! I get why some of you feel like keeping it private, I am not a very private person. Hence, look at what I teach for a living below! I am a Romance Specialist and help women improve the intimacy in their relationships. I guess most people would consider me a very open book.

My dad's side of the family knows NOTHING. They are the same ones that told me last year, "Your hair looks so good...you are so pretty...Just stop eating!"

They are the horrible, nightmarishly unsupportive family you hear stories about! Yup, their mine! My dad is supportive, but his WIFE, his MOTHER and his other DAUGHTER think I've gotten this way by Sin and Sloth and will never let me forget that.

I don't want to even imagine how they would deal with be getting the surgery....I am really, really, REALLY comfortable with just telling them I'm back on Weight Watchers again. It's not like the pay enough attention to know otherwise.

As for the rest of my friends and family, I'm being selective with who I tell because I tend to attract really negative energies or something and have a lot of friends with hang ups. My mother, boyfriend and few good friends already know and are being updated all the time on my approval status.

I hope anyone else with families like this feel better after reading this, learning there are other like you and your families - are you guys out there? Or am I the only one? LOL

Thanks for listening

I have told everyone that I speak to; my immediate family, friends, and co-workers. I work for a very large company and have seen co-workers go out for "gallbladder" surgery and come back and lose a ton of weight. Everyone knows what really happened. I don't want to be one of those people. I am proud that I made this decision and I don't want people thinking that I am not taking this seriously. Plus, I have figured out that a lot of people are misinformed about the Lap Band and I have been able to clear their misconceptions. Also, I am taking a whole month off of work so people are going to know it is more than just a vacation. When I come back to work I look forward to sticking to my plan and knowing that everyone knows what I did and hopefully I won't slip up!!!

As my date grows closer, I am leaning toward only telling a few close friends about my surgery. I suppose this is due to embarassment, that I could not lose weight the "normal" way, whatever that means. Also, I've had a lifetime of comments from family, and just do not want to go there.

Is anybody else hesitating to spill the Beans to friends, coworkers, etc?

I did not tell many people either. I just feel its none of there business to know. I had my done on may 5 and i have lost 43 pounds. Just let the people who love you know.........................

I have a fatty tumor I am going to have removed at the same time, so I am just telling people that I am having that removed and glossing over the fact that I will be having a lap band installed

What's a fatty tumor and where is yours located? Do you know how much it weighs?

I also told anyone who would hear me. Hope it will keep me motivated. Plus, I was gone so much for appointments and stuff, I felt like I kinda had to explain myself....at least to my supervisors. Most have been very supportive and those who haven't or have been on the fence, I informed them about what I was doing and they kinda backed down. (When they figured out that, yes, I had done my research and am ready to do this!) Im pretty much an open book anyway....dont keep secrets well. Hopefully telling everyone wont come back to haunt me.

I know it's difficult to not care about what others think of us but honestly, people are generally too self absorbed to really give anyone else much more than a passing thought when you are in front of them or when they engage in mindless, idle gossip. At the end of the day, you are left with you and what you think of yourself is the only thing that really matters. So don't give others any more time or energy than they are giving you. Caring too much about what others think of us is probably one of the reasons why we are overweight.

My entire family knows, they are very supportive. I told a few people at work, but it was hard to keep it a secret. A few other people in the office have had some type of bariatric surgery. And we all know with rumors, if you associate yourself with someone who has had surgery, you are bound to be next... I really don't care who knows. It was the best decision I could have ever made:thumbup:

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
