Tummy Tuck questions

Recommended Posts

Dr Allbrook... tell me what he is like when you see him please. also, if you get a referral from a specialist it only lasts 3 months for some reason but a GP referral lasts 12 months. When my surgeons suggest I see someone I generally get my gp to write the referral so I am not needing a new one so quickly. :)

mss,

my long-time family GP, who happily referred me for lapband surgery, has said he won't refer me to a PS because 'it's cosmetic' (I bet you can see my eyes rolling from here). So unless I find a new GP, I'm going to have to bear with 3 monthly referrals.

Once I see Dr Allbrook we can compare notes.

I had my Tummy Tuck done when I reached goal, I have to say it is the best thing I could have done. It made me feel so much better in myself.

I don't know... Mine have always been 12 months at least, if not indefinite. I haven't ever had one last only 6 months from a GP.

Referrals from the gp are usually valid for 12 months in Australia although it depends. When you get referred to an ob for a pregnancy for example, they'll often make it indefinite because you often end up going back, I saw the same ob for 3 pregnancies over a ten year period. Same with my eye specialist - I'm going to always have to go for checkups annually so the referral was indefinite.

As for a GP refusing to refer you at your request, I've never heard of that in Australia. I wouldnt have thought that was their business really, whether you want to do something cosmetic. And certainly not for them to tell you they wont refer you because they dont believe you should do it. Cosmetic ISNT medically necessary, that doesnt mean it isnt a reasonable thing to do.

All you need to do is your research, choose a couple of PS you'd like to see and go to a bulk billing clinic and ask for the referrals. They've got no real right or grounds to refuse you, its your right. Sometimes a doctor who really knows you can be a bit interfering.

Ah! The old morality issue. If its not life threatening, then everyone will have an opinion on the should or should not of a thing.

You might want a procedure for *cosmetic* reasons, but does that mean a doctor who is morally/ethically against such a thing should be made to refer you? Do they have the right to say 'No, my ethics won't allow me?"

He's been my Dr for yonks, and Jachut is right, it makes him think he can have an opinion, when really I don't appreciate his opinion. I may go see him again and say I want a referral, and if he refuses, I'll say I'll be changing Drs. I've a little jacked off about it tbh.

Hi, I had a Tummy Tuck after losing 8stone 15 years ago.

At the time it was covered by private health insurance except for the gap which could be quite a bit by now. Then it was $750.

It was the best thing I ever did. My clothes and swimmers all looked great with a "straight" stomach, ie no apron. I have been silly and have put nearly all the weight back on and now I've decided to get banded.

But still the tummy tuck was worth every penny.

A Tummy Tuck is not considered cosmetic surgery if there are medidcal reasons for it eg rash, discomfort etc. It is best to wait about 12-18months after Lap Banding to make sure your weight is stable. My Lap Band Surgoen referred me to a plastic surgeon who does quite a few procedures of banded patients.

I'm in Brisbane, and mine last 12 months (or more if my GP writes indefinite on it) Maybe it depends on the GP?

In Melbourne a referral from a GP lasts 12 months ( unless specified as an indefinite referral) referrals from one specialist to another only last three months.

Hi!

I have only just put down the phone from my health insurer ( Navy Health)

They tell me that anything with a medicare item number is covered under my health, and most other insurers.

I have hospital and extras....it will not cover cosmetic surgery such as boob job but will cover removal of excess skin from weightloss.

Hope this makes you day better.

as for me!!! I still have 6 weeks to get my band so it is not an issue for me yet.:)

Linda

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
