A Few Tips From A Slow Loser - Now Past Goal -

Recommended Posts

Hi Melis,

I know exactly how you feel. I only told maybe five or six close friends (one friend told her whole family, which I wasn't pleased about, but they don't really know me or say anything) and I am so glad because I was worried about any sorts of judgements.

Like you, I certainly didn't think it would still be such a struggle. But in a way, it is has proven to me that I wasn't lying, I wasn't telling others fibs when I said I couldn't understand why I wasn't losing weight when I was doing everything right. Because here I have a tool that doesn't allow me to eat large portions, I am not eating "slider" foods or junk to get around the band and the weight is taking it's own sweet time coming off. I was on a plateau for seven months and then just recently lost ten pounds in a matter of weeks and now it has stopped there again. Meanwhile I keep exercising and improving, and compete only against myself.

Isn't it wonderful after all these years to know that all those doctors, friends and family who blamed you for being lazy or greedy weren't right like you knew they weren't?

I've had a doctor say to me "No one came out of Belsen fat". What a terrible thing to say. But you know, I'll bet that even in a concentration camp, some people got thin a lot slower than the others. Perhaps were even thought to be eating more than their share.

My Mother has always been very large and she even spent a summer in a hospital and I don't recall that she lost much of it then. We have our genes to thank for this.

Keep happy with how you are doing and if anyone makes comments say you are happy with your progress, it is what your body seems to want.

Take care,

M

I just wanted to tell you thxs for the information you provided in this post. Ive been banded for 3 months going threw the ups and down, I have a small band, currently at 2.5cc, down 58lbs just reached the point I can only eat seafood, no other meats. I was really concerned about not being able to eat enough so I added more Protein. Today I made a 52gram protein smoothie for Breakfast which was at 7am. Well around 3pm I realized I hadnt even thought about eating. I tried to eat and of course you know what happened. I waited 2hrs then tried again and dumped again. I couldnt wait to get home and chat with my bandsters friends and ran up on this blog. I was wondering why some days Im able to tolerate more than others and I now realize its the amount of Proteins I begin my day with. Thxs again and congrats on your success.

I, too, am a slow loser. I have lost 39 pounds since band, 49 since process began. It has been 10 months since my surgery. My doctor says he doesn't know why I am not losing more and gave me the rotation diet. No more diets for me. This is a way of life now. I guess I have become comfortable where I am. But, at 59, 49 pounds is a good loss. I am not finished yet, but just letting my body adjusts for itself. I have an appt. for a fill with a new doctor on 10/1 and I am hoping he will offer me encouragement, along with the fill. In any case, I am going to keep doing what I am doing and let God take care of the rest. It is all about the journey, not the destination.

Great thread!! I have been at a plateau for about 6 months now and haven't lost a thing. Recently hired a personal trainer (2 sessions a week) with assignments for what to do on the other days. I'm working out 5 days a week. Also, I think my band may actually be too tight. I've been PBing about every other evening when I eat dinner. I have no problem during the day, but in the evening, I can't hardly get anything to stay down. I'm actually going in for a slight unfill on Weds if my surgeon agrees that that is what I need. I have a horrible sweet tooth and like to graze throughout the day. So, I'm upping the exercise, increasing Water intake, and am focussing on lowering my carbs and increasing my Protein intake.

Wow!

Thanks everyone for posting on this.

My Dr dosent believe I should be doing any Restrictive diets and as long as I am not gaining he and I are ok with my slow loss...OK I am not Great with my slow loss BUT I am happier then possibly gaining.

I have been adding Protein for the past few weeks and it is really starting to work PLUS My hair is comming back in. lol I have always had really thin hair and well I have a bunch of new growth and that is awesome!

I eat a boiled egg for breakfast. And I try to have my version of tuna salad...Change out High Protein greek yougart for the mayo. It is really good! Then I kinda do dinner as a whatever...just not a lot of food. Tostadas are my favorite...beans cheese sour cream YUMMMY!

So I am working on higher protein and Well I am starting to see some movement. So Awesome!

Good Luck all

This advice sounds very nutritionally sound. I am going to follow your advice. How many grams of Protein? Any carbs at all?

This is really helpful to read, I'm going to try it this week. I've not lost as much as I would have liked (banded December 30th, 2011, lost roughly 14lbs since), but I do feel the difference in how my clothes fit, so that's a good thing :-)

To figure out the minimum Protein to eat daily you multiply your weight in pounds by .37 and that how much you should be eating/drinking according to my nutritionist.

This totally makes sense I have cut back on my Protein by making lettuce wraps for lunch. I have been racking my brain for why I have been stuck and it is my reduction of protein....thanks for the tips....going to boil some eggs right now! You rock!

I was banded on 23 April 2012 and for the next 4 months, I lost 50lbs, and then I went back to my old ways and started gaining weight, I noticed i wasn't drinking or eating as much Protein, somewhere along the line I fell off the wagon and I am now so confused. I read your post, which is very encouraging, I am going to try it. I need to restart somewhere.I hope this works for me.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
