Rachel Ray is an idiot

Recommended Posts

Juli, I'm not sure I'm saying it right. What I'm really talking about is the "Hood" speak that some of them use for language. Not really the English language.

They obviously have talent and I'm sure many of them were smart enough to get through HS and college without the free rides you sometimes hear about (our own CSU was caught doing that many years ago with football and basketball players), so why, if they know the English language, were taught correctly in school (you hope!), do they continue to speak that way in public? You don't hear their mamma's talking that way. You don't hear the older men in their communities talking that way. I guess part of my point is that they are also role models to young children. I'm really NOT trying to start a debate. I guess I just don't understand it.

I do have to say though that it reminds me of the the Valley Girl talk in the 80's. I was a participant! You couldn't tell what we were saying most of the time either. Maybe it's the same sort of thing. Better believe though that I did NOT speak that way at home. Folks wouldn't put up with it! BUT that was just between us girls as friends having fun. We weren't on TV!

As a side note, I think I'm just digging myself a deeper hole!! :)

I get your point. And it's EXACTLY that kind of thing you refer to with the valley girl "language". I could be really wrong here, I'm not a linguist nor a sociologist, nor am I really the appropriate person to speak for a culture I only overlap with, but am not a part of. However, when you look at young adult black men and the forces on their lives in America, a powerful way to band themselves together and keep others out is via language. Just like 15 year old girls did with valley girl speak.

Yes it's bigger and reaches further in scope than what we did in our homes in the 80's...You touched on the language of their parents, you touched on a couple of things.

We all use differnt language depending on whom we are speaking with. I drop the F bomb with my friends but not with my boss and certainly not around my child, we edit depending on our audience. Those young players may be very actively choosing their audience, their peers to speak to, and not really give two cents if you get them or not. Or, they may not yet grasp the scope of the audience and haven't tailored thier messages.

It's an interesting conversation to be sure. You are NOT digging a whole, but I dare say there might be other perspectives from which to look at the situation you've not considered. I'm sure I'm missing some too.

Over and out.

Juli, you make some great points. Thanks. I hadn't thought about it that way. My whole view was just the "You're presenting yourself in public, do so as well as you can" view. Which is a fairly narrow view, or can be. Thanks again!!

Ahhhhhhh, but in the NBA the trend is moving towards drafting kids right out of high school. Huge mistake, if you ask me (I know......nobody actually did).

Both Juli and Heartfire are both right, IMO. Smart has little enough to do with diction and syntax (a speaker that isn't smart will reveal it by the content). A good example is Roger Clements. I watched his congressional hearings, and while his delivery is good, he is basically an idiot.

I think it has more to do with life experience. Pro sports (especially basketball) is a closed clique. The only people they tend to be around (as young men) are often just as "limited" in experiences. As the players get older and they do more things than strictly sport of choice, experience is broadened. I think that's why older players "sound" better.

PS- SNT, don't ever EVER speak ill of Peyton Manning!!! LOL

Yeah, I almost made a snarky comment about your "Go Vols" tagline, when your location says Georgia.....However, your witty, witty comments made me go easy. You got off lucky this time, SNT.....

ROFL! Whew, I'm glad I'm humorous then! As far as living in Georgia goes, the second largest population of Vol fans are in Atlanta (and um, ya gotta go where the job is!!!). :)

PS - and all this time, I thought only WASa got my humor!!!

I like watching her 30 minute meals show. I typically do more of the cooking at home and enjoy how quick her recipes take to cook. However, for me it's not always 30 minutes. South Beach also has a 30 minute meal cook book with lots of great healthy recipes.< /p>

I'm not too interested in RR's day time show b/c it's just too feminine, but I guess it is intended to be for women.

Oh, the other thing I like about RR is that she is a cook and not a chef. She is just like everyone at home. And when she makes a mistake or drops something on the floor, like we all do, she just runs with it. Other chefs on t.v. would edit those mistakes out.

Earlier in the thread, I stated that I had always assumed Rachael Ray was a lesbian. Here is video proof that I was wrong. VERY wrong.

Ohhh...I'm not surprised that plain is amused by that. My boyfriend is like that. He'll find the most "vertical" object I'm holding "exciting" and raise his eyebrows and go, "Try it on me?" :)

2cents: hate RR. hate Oprah. Love Conan O' Brian!:tt2: (Do you think he'll divorce his wife and marry me? Just asking!)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
