bmi 34

hi Lisa,

My insurance company (a NW company--Kaiser) SAYS in their written policy that they cover weight loss surgery 35 - 40 bmi if you have other conditions related to obesity. You have to have a combination of things like one good one is to have a sleep study done and be formally diagnosed with sleep apnea. Having diabetes is a good one. :0) They like to see that. Serious joint break down, documented. Asthma. Heart problems. As it turns out with my insurance company, even if you show and document ALL those things you still have to see their dietician for a year, go to group support, go on their diet and exercise program for a year and if you STILL are at the same weight, then maybe they might do the surgery. As if we don't all already know what does or does not constitute a healthy diet, and as if all we need is one more diet. We all gain it back is the problem. For myself, I was 37.7 BMI. I knew I'd never get approved by Kaiser, and wasn't willing to gain 60 lbs to do so. I also know my genes aren't the greatest. Diabetes runs rampant through my family--if I don't get my weight down and keep it down it will happen to me. Kaiser wants to wait til I does--I don't! There are also heart problems in my immediate family. I don't have those yet--and don't want to. I've also had one bout with breast cancer, thankfully detected very early on. Once you've hit 50 years of age, even 40 lbs of overweight DOUBLES your chance of getting breast cancer. So it's very important that I stay--all my life--less than 40 lbs overweight. My obese aunt is dying of breast cancer as we speak. It's deadly important for me to keep my weight down. And yet . . since I don't CURRENTLY have diabetes, heart disease or breast cancer, they won't cover me for weight loss surgery. I had to take out the loan, whether I could afford it or not, and just do it. Good luck to you. My sister went outside her insurance company to visit a bariatric doctor and paid out of pocket for a few visits to him. He was able to help her with jumping through all the insurance hoops and help her document her obesity-related conditions, more to their satisfaction, so at his recommendation her own insurance company was more willing to talk with her about it. You could try working backwards on the problem that way--just a thought. Good luck to you! I'm sure you'll reach the right decision for you.

Wow! I attacked you? Funny, I didn't use profanity or tell you where to go or insult you personally in any way. Merely expressing an opinion you don't want to hear is not an attack. But if it makes you feel better to be mad at me, rather than consider that I might have a valid point, so be it.

And, by the way, I am a new user. Please let me know if new users are not allowed.

FAUXNAIF:

Anyone who would come here and attack me that way can go to hell. It is my choice and I think everyone here has had people hurt them because of their wieght. So i guess im not skinny enough for the rest of the world and not heavy enough for u. What a rock and a hard spot hu? Where can I go if I cant come here for support? We are all overweight and have the same pain. Hope it made u feel better to judge me when u have never seen me or met me. I am about to have surgery and I come here for support, if that is all u have to say then keep it to urself Fauxnaif. I would never be so critical of someone. My choice, my body, and this is a support group. Not a you know it all group. By the way, i dont think u post here often do u? Funny how new users pop up when someone wants to say something so critical.

I know that the last time I had a BMI in the low 30's I wasn't fat. I look at the pictures now and wonder why I thought I was fat! (well, talk to my mother...)
Hijack-----Oh my GOD that is me to a tee!! I have thought I was Fat since 11- I still think I was & than last week my sister said I only started getting really fat 9 yrs ago when Dad died. I said No way I have been fat forever Ask Our Mom.

Also a side note that I was 38 BMI when I started this process in Nov 2004 & am now 41 BMI today. They did measure me a whole inch too high at first. But have gain weight since I started. Not intentionally - Just from all the dam stress & two post-poned surgery dates;0)

What part of the world ar you in and who is your insurance carrier. I have a BMI of 35 and sleep apnea, high blood pressure, stress incontentence. My carrier approved it in less than a day.

I think there are way tooooo many variables for one NP to make generalizations. The size 6 group as I like to call the life long skinny people have no clue what life is like for us.

Don't give up yet! Dig those heels in?? If this was for your child or spouse, you would instinctive fight fight fight. So why not for yourself?

Sorry if my go to hell comment was imature. If it makes u feel anybetter I hope u have a nice trip!! :)

Debby,

You are so right that this is something to fight for as we would move heaven and earth for our families..however as you are aware some of the reasons we tend to put on the weight is because we don't put ourselves first and say no often enough then usually compensate with out bestest friend calories.Iam all with you lets start to fight for ourselves.Low BMI's good on you for recognising the battle beginning sooner.Requiring the heavy artilary now.

Hey Trish, have you heard of extrodinary bandsters? It's a yahoo group for folks with really high BMIs. My DH is a member of that group (he started with a BMI of over 80)

hello, thanks got to read this and OMFG! People take it easy everyone is overweight but some people need to hear comments and take it in. I have a bmi of 49! So booyah haha! In MY opinion, and MY opinion, it really has to deal with how old and tall u are cause if u are shorter and older i can understand but if u need to gain 60lbs for surgery or just need to lose 30 or 40 that can be done with diet and exercise over time. I am...get ready...am 402 lbs and 6'4" ...i would have a bmi of 34.2 if i was 280 which is still pretty high. I think people who over react to comments are looking to surgery for a quick fix in MY opinion. Dont get too damn touchy we are all here to hoping to have a "new" life. But if ur insurance doesn't cover it it's for a reason. If anyone wants to argue bring it on and get it off ur chest! But dont be spreading hate to these boards. U guys start it and i WILL FINISH IT!

I think this was a great thread actually now that I can look back on it. I strongly disagree with the way some people came at me, but that really made me realize that some people are a%$holes no matter where ur at, and there are always people who have ur back as well. I went through the user profiles and found a lot of people here who were young with lower BMIs. They had the surgery and they r doing great It is a personal decision, and anyone of us COULD diet and excersise more. But all of us here struggle with obesity and the fact that we gain weight much easier than a "normal" person. I am happy that I have the self confidence to make my own decisions and dont need everyone here to support me in my choices, thats y its my choice! Joe u have ur own choices to make as well....u r very young looking to do this, some people will disagree with that decision, but not me.....I understand and think its a great choice if u research it and weigh out the risks and benifets. Everyone has a right to their oppinions, I just think we should all think about the way we express them when people come to a "support group." Lets b tastful and try to b supportive of one another. No one has walked a mile in anyone elses shoes here and I just dont think people should say things like "thats a wrong choice for u." But of course this is just how I see it and I really dont care any more how other people see it. I am so thankful for this place and I have met some great people here. I know there are people here who wouldnt make the choice Im making, but they still have offered so much support and understanding to me, and of course there are also people here who have had surgery around the same BMI and they tell me it was the best thing they ever did. 99% of the people here have some of the best characters I have ever been blessed with meeting and great wisdom and strength. Thank u all for being my friend, thank u 4 supporting me when I felt alone, thank u all for just being who u r! And everyone lets respect one another!!!((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))

I used Dr. Ortiz in Tijuana who came highly recommended by current patients. I was 30.1 BMI on April 1st. I had high blood pressure, cholesterol and triclycerides. I had a lumbar fusion in 1994 and exercise is not easy. I have already lost 19 lbs in 24 days. I put the flat $9500 fee on a low interest credit card. I think I will save that much money in large Entrees and junk food within a couple of years. Basically it will pay for itself quickly. All of the follow up care and fills are included in the flat fee. If any revision is ever needed, or if it must be removed (1% chance) that is also free. I AM VERY HAPPY!.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
