Day 4 doing worse...

Recommended Posts

I might be calling the doctor later if things don't improve. I KNOW I"m not gettiing in the recomm. amount of fluids or Protein, I'm lucky to get in 2 bottles of Water, and maybe 20g of protein. It's not like I know i shouldn't, I CAN"T. I get too full, and it still feels like theres an air pocket in my stomach, so it's like trying to eat a meal, when you feel like the biggest belch needs to come up and won't. Last night I felt feverish and my temp in my ear was 100.1? Now no fever, my incisions have started to bleed a little yesterday under the sterie strips, i might have done too much?

I don't feel like the docs office is that concerned with aftercare, and i feel like I'll just be bothering them once again.

I feel so weak today, it's har to take in a deep breath, it hurts in my whole back so bad, I can't stop crying b/c I just wanna feel normal and I'm so weak and tired, I don't know how to get the calories/protein I need. WHat do i do?

I called the dietician once already and she was so not helpful it wasn't even funny, so she's no help...someone please help me...

Katie, I've heard it said quite often that the 4th-5th days out from surgery are the worst. Things often start to improve immediately after this, so just keep doing what you're doing and taking it easy.

Healing is hard work and we have to be careful not to expext too much of ourselves. Getting enough liquid in is the most important thing you can do so just concentrate on sipping your Water and resting. You have plenty of time to think about calories later on. You may indeed have some built-up air inside that is making you feel uncomfortably full, but that will pass.

If you're not feeing better tomorrow then by all means call your doctor! You're not bothering them--that's what they're there for. But don't panic, either. You'll start to feel a bit better each day from here on out. Good luck!!

I too am on my full 4th day post op. I am terribly sore, especially around the incision where my port was put. I am suffering the back aches and am tired, but not having the problem with the fluids, am drinking Water and instant breakfasts, slimfasts, etc with no problem. Thought I was going to go back to work tomorrow, but I think I will take another day or two, as it is uncomfortable to sit upright in a chair too long. My husband is an RN and says usually the 4th and 5th day after surgery are the worse so I would try and wait it out till tomorrow to see if you don't feel different, if not then definetly make that call

katie - i know you feel horrible right now, but the way you feel is probably not abnormal. since you are only 4 days p-o, your stomach is still swollen and sore. this is why you can barely get your fluids in. it is also why you feel like you have gas in your stomach and you need to burp but you can't. a good burp cant make it past the swelling. it took a while before i could burp regularly. i had my surgery on a monday, and i remember that on friday i was really hurting from gas pains. i felt horrible enough that i just had to lay in the recliner for 5 or 6 hours, trying to get the gas to go away. then all of a sudden, i belched for the first time since surgery, and it was wonderful. (i might have farted a few times, too, but a lady never tells:tt2:) and the next day i woke up and my gas pains were gone for good and haven't come back.

the point of this is not to rub it in your face that my gas is gone, but to tell you to just hang in there for a little while longer, and yours will be too. once your swelling goes down, you will be able to get in more liquid, and hopefully you will be able to burp to relieve the gas once your swelling goes down.

if you are feeling weak, then maybe you should drink Protein drinks instead of Water (they are mostly Water themselves). that is, of course, if you are allowed Protein Drinks. if you are able to get some calories into you, even if it isn't much, you might feel better.

if your holes are bleeding, when they weren't before, you might want to take it easier. maybe try not to bend at the waste until they are good and scabby. my docs instructions said that it is normal to have a orangish Fluid come out of you. maybe this is what you are calling bleeding?

of course, if you are worried, call the doctor! you paid them a lot of money, so they can talk to you for a few minutes to allay your fears.

Today is day 4 for me... 3rd full day after surgery. I am still dealing with gas but not as bad as yesterday. I'm having a sharp pain in my rib cage upon taking a deep breath. I truely believe my lung has collapsed in one area. I have been doing fine with getting the fluids down. I did better at that the last 2 days than I did today. I ate some blended potato soup... 3 oz ... and I was full! Would love to drink some Water now but am witing out my 30 mins. I too haven't had the best confidence in my surgeons office or hospital post op. Its very very aggrivating but hang in there!! We'll see the positives soon!

I am day 6 and doing pretty well. I thought for sure that someone had punctured my lung when they put in the trocars during surgery. My neck and chest hurt so bad. I couldn't imagine what they could have done to my neck to make it so hard to move. I kept using the incentive spirometry they gave me so I could keep my lungs moving. I could get it to 2000 or 2500 and figured if I could do that then I couldn't possibly have a collapsed lung. The next day I was so much better. Keep taking the pain medicine. My problem now is that I feel like I am in continual starvation mode. I eat (drink) my meals and within 1 hour I am so darn hungry, almost to the point of pain or nausea. I keep telling myself it will get better but 6 weeks of this will be hell. I hope you get to feeling better. mama59

I'm post op day 6 also and I feel that I'm doing really good. Had to quit the pain meds after day 3 because I didn't like the way they were making me feel. Just stuck to Tylenol instead.

I've noticed this evening that Im really sore in my port area, but I think that's because I was doing alot of sitting up today and moving around more. I think it may even be alittle more swollen, but I can't be for sure, it's just kinda uncomfortable to sit right now. Is it normal for the port to be sore off and on like this?:confused2:

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
