How soon after surgery can you start abdomincal exercises?

Recommended Posts

Can somebody please tell me how soon after surgery they were able to start abdominal exercises? Also, does anybody know of a really good tape/cd that features abdominal exercises. I am worried about sagging skin, so I hope that somebody has some ideas for me. Thanks!

Hi Eileen,

What did your doctor say about exercising after surgery? I'd suggest waiting at least a week or two, but that's just a guess.

With regard to sagging skin, exercising your abs only strengthens the ab muscles. It won't do anything about the skin over the muscles; if it's going to sag it's going to sag. :)

I started strength/weight training after my 2 week checkup....and was fine. Normally do Water aerobics but my scars had not completely healed yet.....so I did a 10 week session with a perconal trainer while I waited.

What kind of ab exercises are we allowed to do? My doc said absolutely no situps....Are there any other ones that won't affect the port?

No situps until when? Ever? That's absurd. My doctor puts no restrictions on any exercise whatsoever after we're healed.

Hey Jasper! Situps are not a good choice to begin with. They put too much stress on the lower back. Crunches are the way to go, much easier on the back! I've started back doing my crunches and I'm working my way back to my pre-op level, and hope to move beyond the 50-60 crunches I was doing almost every day. I'm working at doing 30 every-other day this week, and will move to 40 next week.

Pilaties is very good for the ab too, plus it is no impact, unless you fall off your ball...

Hi Eileen,

I started back with crunches/weights/light cardio at about 2 1/2 weeks out. Everything went fine, but I did notice that a few positions while doing crunches caused some soreness at the port site so I stopped and switched positions. I think your body will tell you if it doesn't like what you're doing! Other than that the exercize felt great and I think it helped get that bloated feeling out of my tummy. Good Luck!

Yeh he said no sit ups ever. The titanium port can cause abdominel bruising. Has anyone ever heard this before?

Nope, I've never heard that and I do ab exercises all the time. Maybe it has something to do with where your port is attached?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
