Clothing sizes

Recommended Posts

I am wondering what is up with clothing sizes and weight loss. I have lost 30 pounds (yeah!) and a lot of inches. When I was banded I wore a size 18W. I can barely fit into size 16 pants now. What's up with this? I would have thought after losing 30 pounds I'd need all new clothes by now but I am still wearing stuff in my closet. Some of my clothes have gotten too big, but I can still wear some 18W's. I went shopping yesterday and was all excited because I thought I'd be able to fit into smaller sizes and I tried on a pair of 16W jeans and they were still a little tight. I don't get it.

one thing i have noticed is that the clothes that were too tight to begin with, now just fit good. ive always thought that ya kinda linger a little bit in your old sizes, and then bam, 10 lbs later your down two sizes!! and it doesnt help that some stores' size 18 is another stores' size 16! so maybe think about if the clothes that still fit were a little on the snug side before the weight loss?

It takes absolutely aaaaages at first when you have lots to lose. I started with a BMI of 35 and I had to lose 30lb before I changed size. Now I lose like 2lb and my clothes are too big!

With weight loss, when you're very overweight, the changes are really hard to see and measure at first but it gets faster and faster as you have less to lose.

I had the same thing happen. I think I lost my weight at the top but not in the hip and thigh area. I think we have to do a lot of exercising for that area to come down. then we can go get new clothes!!

It depends a lot on your body shape too. Us pear shapes, yes, the upper body shrinks fast, and for the apples, they can lose TONS and not lose any round the middle or off their chests.

I swear I've lost the last 10-15 pounds of my toes or something, I'm dying to go down the next size and it just doesn't seem to be happening. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I had to lose 30lbs before I went down a size. It was VERY frustrating. My husband lost 20lbs and was down 2 sizes. How annoying was THAT?

I've lost 30lbs and am barely the size down...I squeezed in some jeans that were tooooooo tight two months ago, in fact I bought them for my little sis but they were too big so I was thought...maybe after my surgery and I am wearing them now. I have a muffin top when I sit but I am really happy anyway.

I have been crying that I haven't gone down sizes like I should for a 30lb loss, but then I think about how I refused to go the size up so maybe that is why I haven't gone down too much. I was wearing too tight clothes.

:cursing::blushing::smile:

I started out in an 18W and jeans were a 20. I am now in a 16, not 16W, but regular 16 even in jeans. I'm down 44 pounds.

I totally agree. I was complaining to my partner that I haven't lost any sizes even though I'm down 35 pounds. And she gently reminded me (scarsam) that I was poured into my size 26 and probably should have been in a size bigger. Now I'm wearing most of my 24's but it didn't click because I never really admitted I had gone above 24 in the first place. Oh the mind games we play on ourselves. I'm one month out today so I'm going to take some more pictures and compare to my pre-op pics, maybe that'll help me feel more accomplished. I'm sure it will come!

It does take forever, I am down 50 pounds and still am only down 2 dress sizes. It is very frustrating...but at least the sizes are going down and not up!

Misery does love company! I too have been frustrated with the 'success of the scales, but not the clothes'! It couldn't be that my clothes were so tight that breathing was optional! I suspect it has to do with dark closets...after all, wire hangers multiply in there, so maybe our clothes shrink!

I'm having the same problem. My old clothes are not too big but my smaller clothes are too tight :confused2:. I can either wear something really baggy or tight. Can't wait to be a consistenly smaller size!

I haven't been banded yet, but I have come to the conclusion that my 18's have actually stretched out what should be a 20. Ive just gotten so used to wearing my clothes too tight! Over time, clothes lose A LOT of structure and I know thats part of the problem too.

I can't wait to get a surg date so I can share clothes sizes with you guys!!:biggrin2:

The clothing size also has a lot to do with the stores you shop in. I've lost around 30 pounds and I am down one pants size. I was in a 18 now I wear a 15/16 jeans and pants I am 14/16. I want to be in a true 12 before its all said and done as I like having curves. I agree with myturn0421 that we are just use to our old clothes and well our old clothes are use to us. Try any store but Old Navy as I can't wear any of there 16's but I can wear them at all the other stores. Now at Lane Bryant they use more material so I can get into a 14 pants but I still stay with my 16 jeans as I don't want the inner tube.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
