So... I don't know what happened to me today. I was at lunch, and I had some mashed potatoes. Which I have eaten a few times since surgery especially during the mushy phase. I take two bites and...uh oh. I'm stuck? I've had a few feelings of something similar before where I swallowed too big of a bite or something and it's a little painful for about 30 seconds and then you feel it pass. But this time it stayed there. I could feel the pressure on my chest. And I made my way into the bathroom and started to dry heave. Nothing came up. I start to wonder if I'm possessed. Next I heave and I expel from my devil riddled body nothing more than a bunch of saliva. Which is odd for several reasons, what happened to the mashed potatoes? Did they make it down and the saliva didn't? I'm nota scientist, but I would think it would go liquids first then the denser of the foods would go next. However, not the case.

The point of my post is to ask, was that a PB? Because to my understanding that would be a Productive Burp, but I didn't burp and nothing was produced. If I tell Dr. R. about this tomorrow do you think he might not give me a fill? I think i desperately need one, I'm hungry all the time!

also, who's going to the meeting tomorrow?

that is a pb sort of and what came up was the thick salvia (slime) that your stomach produces when food has trouble passing the band.

Bc it was mashed pototoes you could have eaten too fast and a bubble formed or the pototes just clogged up your stoma. Ive pd'd liquids before and even ice cream, thats why they say to sip your liquids slowly

If it only happened the one time I think you will be fine.

Thank you for the reassurance. It's odd to think that I got something stuck when I didn't think anything was in the band!

Jay, you should be a writer or a comedian. I love how you describe things!! I am going to the meeting and bringing along my friend, Jamie, too. I am going to have to bolt as soon as it's over because I have a friend in from out of state......promised him we'd do St. Patty's partying. :)

I'm in. See you all tomorrow! :scared2:

Hi everyone,

Had my first appt with Dr. R today and also met with Sari, the nutritionist. He told me I am a good candidate! So yay!! My next steps are to have the upper GI and meet the psych and then I see Dr. R again in 4 weeks.

I am a little nervous about the Upper GI - I have had one before so I am not nervous about the procedure. I am more nervous about the results. My acid reflux has really been acting up lately and I am just so scared something will show on the results and I won't be able to have the lap-band.

Everything was just like you all said, except for one thing. The PA part. I only talked to the PA for like 5 minutes and then Dr. R came in and talked to me for about 20 minutes and then he checked my heart and that was it. I was only expecting to see him for 5 minutes but I got a lot more of his time.

I am SO excited!!

Ms Dollaz,

The reason they give you the Upper GI is to check for a hiatial hernia. If you have one, they still go ahead with the surgery, but they take the extra 20 or so minutes to repair it while giving you the lap band. No worries. It won't change when you have things done---just what they do while they're in there!

Coral,

You left your water bottle behind last night. I think Jamie took it with her....

Tova,

We've missed you! Hope things are going well. Glad to hear you're losing again!!!!

Jay, You were missed, as was Yvonne!! It was kinda quiet without you there, and definitely fewer laughs.....

Heidi,

What's up girl? How many days til you leave?! Hope you feel better.

Tanya,

So glad you made the effort to be there less than 2 weeks after surgery! Hope your first day back to work was a good one. Get some rest. You're probably going to be very tired!!

Many of us can't go to the next meeting--it's during school vacation week. So....a handful of us intend to go visit Phyllis over at the Faulkner instead. If you're interested, come join us!

Hey everyone..sorry to have missed the mtg last night...my husband didn't get home until 7:00..Paige...I got your message, but my phone wasn't charged... I got it last night. Hope all is well with everyone. I FINALLY feel restriction...What a feeling! I now know what I have been missing! It took six months and five six fills to get there... I have been really discouraged in the past few weeks and had a "one on one" talk with Dr. R... he is SO HARD to talk to..he gave me a pretty aggressive fill and told me to stay positive. I am looking forrward to dropping some more weight now!

Hey Everyone, Hope it was a good meeting last night. I definitely thought of you all and was looking forward to meeting some new faces as I still don't know names to screen names. It was just a busy day and I really didn't want to make the hike into boston. I work in Boston, so if I get the chance to stay home one night I will!

Anyhow, I have my 2nd appt. with Dr. R on Monday. I wanted to ask what that is like, as I may have to lug the lil ones with me. Ages 3 and 2. Is it mostly just a weigh in and possibly a surgery date? I can't bear the thought of them tearing up the lobby just waiting for me to get in. Also, I have no excuse but I haven't lost much weight this month. Does that effect getting a surgery date? I know they want to make sure you are serious about this before going in. Ahh the weight saga continues!

Hi Everyone!

I'm glad I found this forum!! I'm Alanna and I'm interested in getting the lap band surgery done at Brigham and Womens.

I see there are meetings and I guess I just missed the one in March, so I will be attending the next one in April.

My Question is can you make an appointment/consult with the doctor before going to a meeting?

Could someone guide me along the steps of the process. I dont have any health issues well besides my fatness. So I "think" I am an Ideal candidate.

How do you get started?

Any info will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

muffet the very first thing you want to do is attend an informational seminar. you will have to sign up for it bc it is part of the requirements for surgery. if you know who you want to pick for your surgeon you can start the calls now (correct me if I am wrong folks) but I think it is helpful to attend the info session first bc the team will be there and able to answer all the questions about the procedure and requirements.

I so wanted to be at the support meeting this week.

I thought I had the stomach virus, but it turned out to be an attack of gallstones!!! Only had one other attack like that...horrid pain.

I am going to have my upper GI , psych and nutritionist visits Monday.

Then I go to see my PCP to see if I really need to have my gall bladder removed.

Has anyone ever heard of them doing it in the same procedure as Banding?

The method of operation is similar, and I figured I'd get blown up like a balloon only once and have the whole shebang over and done with.

Hi Singing, I'm sorry you had to go through that, I hope you are feeling better. Good luck with your upcoming appointments. I'm seeing Dr. R on Tues.

Can someone please tell me where I need to go at the Brigham? My first appt. was at the faulkner.

Thanks

Sandy

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
