So hungry on my pre op diet

Recommended Posts

Hang in there, you can do it!!

I'm reading a cognative therapy book that has really helped me. One of the things I keep telling myself (also on a pre-op diet) is "hunger will not kill me" (this is from the book)

The other thing is to write down on index cards the reasons you want to do this and the benefits of losing weight. When you are hungry, go through your cards to reaffirm why you are doing this.

Doesn't take away the hunger, I know, but it does remind you why you are doing what you are doing.

Good luck!

I'm on day two of pre op diet and similar to you I get 5 slim fast shakes a day plus 8 oz of fruit juice. I try to remember to ask myself if I am really hungry with hunger pangs etc. or is it just head hunger. Usually it is all in my head So far I am doing o.k.. I am keeping something to drink next to me at all times and that helps too.

That's a great idea about keeping something to drink next to you at all times. I just bought a big plastic container that has a core that you freeze to keep the liquid cold. It has a little spout that you use to get the Water out.

I'm going to fill it with Water and sit it right next to me! :o

Hang in there. the 2 weeks really goes by pretty fast. My two weeks is up Monday. Its saturday now. I have already lost 11 lbs. not trying to just trying to shrink the old liver and waiting for the surgery date. Its all a preparation for a new life. I have really thought of it as a prep period and a cleansing so it feels ok, not really bothered me much. Hang in there it will be over be you know it.

Frankly, Im anxious to be on my 2 week pre-op diet. Sometimes it's easier when you have less choices. Plus the weight loss will start. Has anyone used Unjury products? Do they taste good?

You know I've only been using Slim Fast Optima and Atkins. They didn't taste too bad at first, overly sweet and left an odd taste in my mouth. Now, 6 days later, I've started to crave them! I haven't tried any others because I love these. I've got the Slim Fast Optima French vanilla and Milk chocolate and the Atkins Caramel Latte which tastes like a frappachino.

I'm a little nervous about this part. I ordered the sample pack from Baritric Eating. I tried a pre mixed shake this morning (it was in an aluminum can), and it was so icky sweet I couldn't handle it. So am in a search for something for when my time comes.

Hey Stepofffaith, congratulations of your sugery date! Here's hoping it all goes well.

I really like the Unjury Protein drinks......I'm on day five of liquids....two more to go for me!

I have to say that althought I've been kind of hungry (although not nearly as bad as I anticipated).....it has given me this incredible sense of empowerment....

Today is donut day at work.....we're talking six dozen, bakery fresh, assorted donut....usually I would eat at least two....NOT TODAY....and it made me feel WONDERFUL!

This is a necessary step in the process and I am *trying* to embrace it!

It will be long time before I get excited about Jello again, though~

Im also on the pre-op diet, my Dr says 6 liquid shakes a day. But he also gave me the option of replacing one or two of the shakes for a bowl of pureed Soup. So last night I needed to have 2 more shakes and instead I had a bowl of Tomato Soup. I was very full. I was told to just keep my calorie intake at a max of 1000 cals. One thing I have noticed, if I drink right after I eat, I get hungry quicker. So I have started drinking my Water, tea, juice, whatever, prior to drinking my shakes. Try that maybe it will help. My surgery date is the 28th and I just cant wait!!!

It takes a few days to break the carb addiction, too. Once you get past that, I think you'll find yourself much less hungry. Hang in there!

Tanks all, Great ideas.

I couldn't stand it last night and "cheated" I had a cup of chicken broth. It was great.

My dated is 3/25. I've lost 18 pds on my pre- pre op diet and now my pre op diet.

I'm a Chaplain for Hospice and see many people facing an early end of life because of live style choices. I don't want that for me so, this at age 52 will help me change that for me.

My Dr. put me on a two week pre op diet of Optifast only. Five small shakes of 160 calories each day. This is day four and I'm really hungry.

Dr. says it shrinks liver, quicker surgery, quicker recovery.

Any Comments?

You can't drink any crystal lite, or any chicken broth or anything? OMG

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
