Pre Op Diet Experiences

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm interested in all your experiences of the pre-op diet. I'm due for banding on 19th March and have been told to have yoghurt only (along with normal fluids) for ten days before. I see there are a number of other recommended pre op patterns.

My surgeon says that the yoghurt diet makes the liver smaller and so makes the surgery easier from a technical perspective. Has anyone else heard this? The cynic in me suspects that the pre-op diet is designed to get me mentally prepared for the first few weeks post op.

What have others done in the week or two pre-op?

Gordon

Hi Gordan, I think most of us have to do that 2 week diet before hand to "shrink the liver". I agree that it's probably partly to get you used to eating a certain way. As far as yogurt, you are the first person I have heard of that was told to just eat yogurt. Many of us were put on protien drinks and some on Clear Liquids. Yogurt sounds better to me. But being realistic, you could shrink your liver just as well if you threw in some green veggies and lean protien. After surgery it is important to stay on liquids or semi liquids but I can't imagine why it would be important before. Now I'm going to get all kinds of flack from other bandsters for saying that. I'm running away:)

Hello Gordon,

I am scheduled for 3/17 to be banded and started on Monday my diet two weeks before the surgery. I am doing Atkins shake for Breakfast, 11:00 am Protein bar, 1:00 pm another shake, 3:00 pm snack vegs with one tablespoon of salsa with fat free cream cheese (they give you a list of things you can eat as a snack) 6:00 pm dinner I have lean cuisune or under 300 cal dinner on the list (I don't want to cook so I pick up the frozen ones) but it would be 4 oz of meat with lots of vegs and 1-2 oz of starch. For dinner snack is sugar free Jello and 64 oz of Water a day. This is under 1000 cals a day I can't exceed that and I have to exercise 30 minutes a day. I live in Boston and go to Beth Israel Hospital is not bad just I miss the real food instead of the shakes.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
