Cutting back on meds...

Recommended Posts

Curious to hear about how Lap-Band surgery has helped people to cut back on their meds. For my Psych eval I told the Therapist I wanted to cut back on the meds as much as I wanted to lose the weight.

I take meds for Diabetes, High BP, Afibb, Cholesteral and Asthma. A total of 16 differant meds in all. I am encouraged by the thought of getting off as much medication as possible. I don't expect to stop all the meds, but would like to cut back on as many as possible.

I haven't heard or read much on the topic and would like to hear everyone's comments.

Thanks, Jeff

I haven't had to take any regular meds but my mom, who also had the surgery is no longer diabetic. Her cholesterol's gone down and her physician's said she's the healthiest she's been in years. Losing the weight certainly helps.

I am almost off the diabetic medicine most likely one more month.

I also no longer use a cpap machine.

I went from taking two pills a day for my blood pressure down to 1/2 a pill. Also, and this is the best part - I'm totally off the CPAP machine for my sleep apnea.

The Dr. says that at this rate I'll most likely be completly off the med's later this year.

03-07 - 374lbs - Started this journey

10-07 - 348 - Surgery Date

02-08 - 310 - Still working it

I would like to get off the CPAP machine also. So far I've managed to lower my Lantus (Diabetic injectable) from 100 units to 40 units a night.

Its encouraging so far and I haven't yet had the surgery.

I had to stop taking my diabetes meds the day of surgery and was worried about getting it in for the first few days. Now day 15 post op I haven't taken it at all I've lost 13kg (28lbs) and my blood sugar this morning before Breakfast was 6.8 and has been all week. I am not going to my GP tomorrow and am telling her I don't want to go back on the pills.< /p>

Jack,

How much of a juggling game is it after post op with the meds? Was it cold turkey stopping the meds or a gradule decline. It would seem with the diabetes you would have to test your Blood sugar quite often and adjust on the fly.

I am not banded yet but have similar med issues and I am curious how it will be impacted.

Thanks

Hey Guy's (& Gal)

Had to go in for my DOT physical last friday and my reg. Doc was very interested in my Lapband and was impressed with the loss of 45 lbs. My BP & Cholesterol was the best it had been in years, I did mention dropping the med's but he would like to give it some more time before doing so.

I never got around to doing the sleep study so am scheduled Apr. 1st for it. Asked about the CPAP and Doc said at this point, the way I'm going it may be a waist of time??? I'm ready to drop the med's, chewing any med's sucks!

Good luck to all, Steve

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
