Need PB advice-food coming out my nose!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

Sorry to be so gross, but I was banded 9 months ago, at 205 lbs, down to 147 now, and all of the sudden, about two weeks ago, I am PBing all night long. Anyone know why or how to stop it? It happens once I am asleep and it wakes me violently, because I either breath the food/stomach juices into my airway and gag, or it comes flying out my nose, which burns so incredibly badly! I have tried not eating anything for the last 4 hours before bed, and then it was pure acid/stomach juices that came up, which also burned. My last adjustment was in October so I don't think that's the problem. It is happening about every 20-45 minutes and making it really difficult to get a good nights sleep. I have also tried sleeping sitting up, which prevents it from coming out my nose, but not from going down my esophygus and gagging me. Help!

Talk to your doctor if this persists. It isn't terribly uncommon; however, the danger is that you will aspirate some of the reflux into your lungs in your sleep which may lead to pneumonia. You may need an unfill even though it's been a while since your last fill.

My surgeon gave me Nexium to take for the next several months b/c of that very reason....reflux. Even though I 've never had reflux before....he said it's very common after banding and wanted me to use this med for the first 3-6 months.

AWESOME job on your weight loss!!

I'm so relieved someone else has had this happen. I couldn't find any posts about it happening to people when they're asleep, and I started to wonder if I was having some really weird side affect. I still can't figure out why it suddenly started happening after 8 months, but it is driving me crazy... I have an appt to see the dr next week (we just moved 120 miles and it was holly h&*# getting my surgeon reassigned). Thanks-Sara

I am a new bandster- but I would be worried (did i say new NEUROTIC banster??) I have read other people on here that had band slippage that seemed to present that way!! Sounds like you need an unfill stat!!

xoxo,

Lisa

That's something I wondered, but I guess my search skills weren't so good, because I couldn't find anything. Do you think that's what it is??? I wondered why it would suddenly start happening, unless something had changed! -Sara

I had a hernia years ago, so I know what it feels like, and I don't think it is that, I am pretty convinced it is some nasty acid reflux. -Sara

I suffered with acid reflux for 3 months after my 3rd fill......was sure I had an ulcer and had an EGD. They said, no ulcer.....my band was just too tight. They loosened my band and I had a much better life after that.

My 5th and last fill was the first part of December and I definitely believe my band has tightened since then. Starting in mid-January I was havig problems getting food down and doing a lot of PB'ing and had a siege of about a month where I had the same thing you've got....bad reflux and PB when I am asleep. It would wake me up out of a sound sleep and send me running to the bathroom or I would wake up coughing and choking. Seems to have settled a little since, but I attribute it to being over-filled.

That's exactly it! I am STILL waiting for the insurance company to approve my transfer to a new dr, and making my 4-5 bolts to the bathroom per night. Hopefully I can get "unfilled" soon. -Sara

I am Sorry, That sounds awful... Could It be a hiatal hernia, I have one and plan to get it fixed during my band surgery. I take medication that helps w/ it called protonix, given to me by my gastroenterologist. and it helped w/ reflex immediately and I hope it works after.. I wonder does it have to do w/ all the gas?

Again, I've had a hernia so I know what that's like, and I don't think that's it. I think I am overfilled, but still waiting for my records to transfer so I can see the doc! -Sara

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
