Any protein suggestions besides shakes???

Recommended Posts

I CANNOT get Protein Shakes down any more. I don't have limitless funds to continue purchasing them...and I've tried at least 10 different brands....

So...I'm on to the next thing... anything low cal that people eat or drink to get that Protein in??? I'm able to get about 60-70g a day with just food..but my nutrionist wanted 80-100g...

I wish I could just drink them...it would be way easier!

have you tried the "Any Whey" stuff? I haven't yet but it's supposed to have no flavor so you can add a scoop to Soups or whatever you're cooking.

I can't wait to hear some other suggestions too!!

Refried Beans

eggs

Cottage cheese

Parmesean cheese

Are some of the things I use to get my Protein, you can mix refired Beans salsa and add cottage cheese instead of sour creme and it is yummy and you get a band of Protein from that.

I always am trying to add protein. If you add parmesean cheese to chicken that is a double wammy of protein.

Those are some of the suggestions I have. I drink V-8 juice to help get in my vegtables each day.

I just made some spinach/cucumber/celery juice that has 7 grams of Protein and 80 calories. The recipe calls for 4 oz spinach, 1 cucumber, and 1 stalk of celery and it made about 12 oz. It tasted mostly like cucumber. I made it for the veggie goodies because I don't care for eating them, so I was a little surprised to see how much Protein was in it.

Turkey chili is pretty high in protein, too: 1 cup has 160 calories and 22 grams of protein. Wolf Brand Chili

I like the Low-Carb Slimfast shakes: 190 calories and 20 grams of protein, even more than the "High Protein" Slimfast.

i think GNC carries some little vials of Protein Syrup stuff. from what i've heard it doesn't taste great, but you're swallowing such a small amount that it isn't that awful, and you get your Protein taken care of pretty quick. i also love egg white omelettes and babybel light cheese as high-protein meals.

good luck!

GNC carries a drink (Isopure) with 40 grams of Protein and no carbs. I can't stand Protein Shakes so I used these for the pre-post op diet and after fills. They taste slightly chalky, but are in fruit flavors that are very tolerable and this is coming from someone who can't stand any of it. Good luck! I also eat a lot of egg drop Soup that I make with just chicken stock and a couple of eggs.< /p>

- Other people have mentioned it but Cottage cheese is a great source of high protein with very low carbs. Better than Tofu in my opinion. You can mix it in a blender until smooth and add it to many things. You can substitute it for Sour Cream in things like Refried Beans as already mentioned or to make a chip dip. You can also use it in place of milk and stir it into things like Tomato Soup. Or my favorite is to make sugar free pudding by replacing the 2 cups milk it calls for with 1-1/2 cups blended cottage cheese with 1/2 cup skim milk (or Water to reduce calories) I know it sounds wierd but it really tastes good. It reminds me of pudding made with whole milk.

- Above I mentioned chip dip. I know we should be avoiding carb heavy chips but you can make chip-like high protein snack by taking Hormel's Turkey Pepperoni slices and putting them in the Microwave on some paper towels for 1-2 minutes. They are very good, salty but good and virtually no carbs.

YUMMM - that sounds really good. What kind of dip do you make it with? Like a ranch mix?

Someone told me South Beach Protein Bars - 20 g of Protein - If you are getting 70-80 g you are doing good anyway. Your doc has a high requirement. There are many brands of protein bars you can try and aren't expensive. If not that, add more meat Proteins like chicken, tuna, fish. Each on average has 7 or more g of protein per ounce - so an extra few ounces you'll meet your requirements. Good luck

Here's my 108g Protein day today:

Breakfast - 1/2 cup eggbeaters omelet plus 1/4 c cottage cheese

lunch - 2/3 cup tofu with teriyaki sauce, 1/2 cup lettuce

dinner - 5 oysters, 1/2 cup spinach, 2 T light mayo, 1 T dill relish

snack - Zensoy chocolate pudding cup

It's higher in fat (47g) and carbs (77g) than I'd like, but I could have decreased it by reducing the teriyaki sauce, sauteeing the oysters instead of pan-frying, subbing nonfat sour cream for the light mayo, skipping the pudding cup.

Most days I'm hitting 70g Protein with less than 40g carb and less than 25g fat. If I had to regularly hit 100g I'd probably add a Protein shake snack...

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
