Hi Gwen,

Today I feel awesome! Soreness all but gone (just a little in my port side). I went shopping and I went to the GP - my incisions will be lucky to even have a scar! I'm so happy.

Hi everyone. I am 37 and live in a small town in northeast Wisconsin. I am married (13 years) and have 2 daughters, ages 8 and 11. We have a dog, 2 cats, 2 gerbils and a turtle (and a partridge in a pear tree!). I was banded on my birthday (Nov. 2). Total weight lost (including pre-op liquid diet) is around 45 pounds. I am happy I got the band, although will be happier when I get some restriction. I will have my 2nd fill on Feb. 5th. Hopefully that will help. Best of luck to all, whether you've been banded or are waiting to be banded!

Robin :rolleyes2:

Hi Tawnya, I am also self pay. Its not really covered in Canada. I've decided to go with Dr. Ortiz in Mexico. Apparently he doesn't have the greatest bedside manner, But he's a master at what he does. Its going to cost me half of what it would have in Canada. The biggest thing is to make sure you have a fill Dr. or clinic that will take out of country patients. Good luck.

Hi Anngie, I was also looking into Dr. Ortiz. I have heard lots of good things about his surgical experience. I have decided to go with Dr. Aceves. I still don't have a date, I have talking with the patient coordinator and am doing my research to find a fill doctor who will see me. There are a few in my area. :rolleyes2:

Yay Jen!

You've already lost almost 8kg--that's terrific! At almost a year out, I do have visible scars, but they aren't bad at all, and they are definitely better to look at than my fat belly was! :frown: Glad to hear you are doing so well. Keep up the great work.

I guess I am a little slow saying hello, but now that I am post op, I feel like I am going to need all the support I can get. I'm 36 years old and pretty much my whole life revolves around my 3 beautiful daugthers. I have a 14 yr old, 22 month old and a 7 month old. Not much time for anything else but caring for these little sweeties. The main reason I had lap band surgery was to better my chances of being around a long time to watch my girls grow up. This message board has been my only real outlet. I currently am living near Richmond, Virginia, but home for me is Colorado. Most of my family is there and I am quite homesick as I have very few friends and even less family here. After the girls go to bed at night I hop on here and read and read and it helps me from feeling as lonely. Anyways... this is getting long and it definately was not meant to be a sob story. I am just so glad you all are here for support through this journey. Thankyou!!

Hi. I am 31, I have been married for 11 years and we have a 2 year old son whom we adopted. I have been overweight since I hit puberty. I am getting the surgery for two reasons (well two that helped me decide to get the surgery rather than lose weight without the surgery).

1) I would like to have a baby, I have only been pregnant once, and that resulted in an ectopic pregnancy. This pregnancy may have destroyed one or both of my tubes because my tubes are now blocked. This means that I have to have IVF. The doctors won't do an IVF unless my BMI is under 40, I would prefer to have a BMI under 30 because then the risk of miscarriage is greatly reduced.

2) My mother (only 55) has had 6 heart attacks, 2 strokes, diabetes, congestive heart failure, and end-stage renal failure. All of this started because of her weight. She now has a defribulator implanted in her heart. I have got to stop doing the same things to myself.

I have been working on losing weight during the waiting period by trying to eat as if I am already banded (following general rules from this forum - Protein first, 60 grams of protein per day, no liquids with meals or for 1/2 hour after meals.) I am also exercising every day. So far I have lost 6 lbs.

Hi everybody. I'm in Atlanta. I'm 34, never married, no kids. I do have a Jack Russell named Elwood.

I'm not banded yet. I'm meeting several doctors in the next couple of weeks, searching for the perfect one for me. I'm self pay, so I'm hoping to have the surgery in the next month or so.

Saturday I crossed a big hurdle when I called my dad and asked him to help me pay for this. I was concerned because my weight has been a sensitive issue between us my entire life. He's heavy, too, but is a firm believer in the double standard. I was afraid he'd say this was the "easy way out." Shockingly, he was supportive and agreed to help me pay for it. (If he hadn't agreed, I still would've paid for it by myself.) Now there's nothing in my way to starting a whole new life!

That's awesome travelchick! My experience is very similar to yours, my weight has been an issue with me and my dad for too long.

I am less than a week away from surgery. I went to all my pre-op and pre-admit appointments yesterday and all I can say is I'm so ready to get this journey started. I don't know if my nerves can take anymore!

Hi everyone My name is Jessica, I am 30 years old, married with 2 children. I have been obese most of my life...It took me three years to try and figure out how I could have lap band surgery, and finally in August of 2007, I found the way. My insurance wouldn't approve, so I am a self pay. I am a full time respiratory therapy student, finishing up my first year in the program. At my highest weight I was 349. Since having the surgery I am down to 259 lbs. I haven't seen these numbers in years..I have a very long road still yet to go. My life is so much fuller now...I am so happy I have the band. It has changed my life for the best. Welcome everyone to the thirties thread. I look forward to seeing all of you on the thread...

I am 11 days post surgery, and feel great. I can finally sleep on my side again... that is the best. I cannot wait to get to the mushy phase this Friday, but have been doing pretty well on the liquids. I need to focus on getting enough calories and Protein - it is just so boring to not have variety, or enough creativity to create variety. The crazy part is the fact that I have the trouble consuming enough. Does that happen?

I realize now that I need to change my screen name from YIKES! to something like, 'No Problem'... It's almost as if this band has always been there.

Good luck to those of you getting close to surgery!

Congratulations Yikes!

Love the name - that's one of my favorite words to use!

Sometimes it is a struggle to get enough in - especially Protein. Sure, I can get in some calories if I surround it with a milkshake but protein is tougher!

Sounds like you are doing really well with the liquid part. Mushies will be more satisfying and easier for you. I still had trouble getting enough protein but I felt better getting to have starches

You are on your way!!

Hi Everyone, I am 31. I am married with 2 cats, no kids. I have been over weight my entire life. So I am really excited about starting my life over with surgery on March 27, 2008. I know it is going to be a lot of hard work and dedication. I am so glad to find a group of people that will be able to understand what I am going through and how I feel. I am finding that some think that I am taking the easy road, but I know deep down that this journey is far from easy.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
